HP Spectre x360 13.5 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-ef0000 RCTO Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

I have some type of critical touchpad failure that disallows use of the touchpad for selecting, right or left click, and basically using the click function in most cases.    I've tried resetting to default settings, multiple component tests, hard resets, restarts, shutdowns, updating drivers (no updates available).   The UEFI component tests says there's a critical error.  When I submit for support, it says try the test with a new mouse.   I've never used a mouse so that's not possible.   I am basically resorting to the touchscreen which does still work. Am I going to have to throw away my computer because of a touchpad error?  If so, I think my time with HPS is done, which is too bad considering I just ordered a printer.

Also, in looking at my warranties, it says I have some type of 3-year coverage, but HP itself says warranty is expired.   Help.

@YourFavoriteJen, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

You're definitely not going to need to throw away your computer for a touchpad issue — especially not a premium model like the HP Spectre x360
It sounds like you've already done a thorough round of basic troubleshooting, which is great.
Since the UEFI hardware diagnostic returns a critical failure and you're experiencing severe click/gesture unresponsiveness, it's likely a hardware issue, not just a software or driver glitch. Here's a more structured plan of action to get this resolved:

Confirm the Nature of the Failure

  • Physical Damage: Was the touchpad ever physically damaged? (e.g., liquid spills, hard impacts, pressure)
  • Functionality: Does the touchpad move the cursor but not click, or is it fully unresponsive?
  • Timing: When did this start happening? (after a Windows update, BIOS update, or out of the blue?)

Advanced Checks You Can Try

  1. Re-run the UEFI Test:
    • Shut down the laptop completely.
    • Tap Esc repeatedly while powering on.
    • Press F2 for System Diagnostics.
    • Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad and run the test again.
    • If it fails again with a "critical" status, note down the Failure ID code.
  2. Check Device Manager:
    • Press Win + X > Device Manager.
    • Under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, locate your touchpad.
    • Right-click > Uninstall device (make sure "Delete driver software for this device" is not selected).
    • Restart your PC to allow Windows to reinstall the driver.
  3. BIOS Update:
    • Visit HP Support page for your Spectre x360 14-ef0000 model.
    • Download and install the latest BIOS (if you haven’t already).
    • Sometimes BIOS contains firmware patches that affect hardware like touchpads.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
