Envy x360 Convertible 13-ar0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laptop came with 8 GB of RAM, two of which are unnecessarily dedicated to the GPU (Integrated AMD Vega 6).

System > Properties show that there is only 5,9 GB or RAM available to the system. Here is what Task Manager shows:

TaskManager_2020-04-24 220708.png

The PC is not used for gaming, neither it is suitable for it, as you can see, only 300 MB is used from the 2 GB dedicated pool.

The question is how can I decrease the amount of dedicated RAM to the GPU ?

  • I updated my BIOS to the latest version
  • I didn't find any settings in the BIOS that refer to GPU RAM
  • My Radeon drivers are latest too
  • Couldn't find anything in the GPU settings that is connected to the amount of RAM

I need this memory back. Laptop has no options of RAM upgrade - it's  8 GB soldered to the plate.

Is it doable at all ? Maybe some future BIOS or AMD driver release ?

If not under Windows 10, would switching to Linux free the dedicated RAM ?

Thanks

Hi Sir, thank you for replying.

I've read both posts and it doesn't sound like Microsoft Protect Play has to do anything with this issue.

AMD official site states that APU's don't have the memory of their own, so instead it uses some part of the system RAM. The amount is controlled by BIOS settings which most of the desktop motherboards contain as a user configurable option.

BIOS of this laptop has no such options.

The real question is does HP plan to add this option in some future BIOS upgrade or not ?

I'm sorry but I can't accept your reply as a solution.
