HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cs3xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product number : 7ZZ53UA#ABA  This device has an ELAN clickpad. The last Win 10 update was moments ago.

I cannot disable the touchpad period.

My goal is to disable it while using a wireless mouse. The "disable touchpad while mouse is connected" feature is NOT available in the mouse or touchpad software controls. Two attempts to totally disable the touchpad by using the Device manager don't work. Right click on ELAN clickpad gives a choice of "Uninstall device" not "Disable device". Two attempts to uninstall device have each led to a request to restart the computer. Each time, after restarting the computer, the "clickpad" still works.

Arthritis make it important I use a mouse and have the clickpad disabled since I seem to touch it while typing. I'd have to be carefully guided if it is necessary to disable this device using the BIOS.

Thanks,

This is the answer I got from HP Support: I had to reboot after changing the registry. It worked!

Hi there

Welcome to the HP Support . I'd be happy to assist you.

Please perform the below steps and check.

Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.

When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.

When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.

Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.

Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If that doesn't work or isn't available, a registry edit should be the solution for us, I'd personally suggest a registry backup by clicking on file and export before performing the below steps, to be on a safer side:

Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMousekey in the left pane.

Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

After making those changes your touchpad will now be disabled every time you connect a mouse to your laptop. As you can see, even though this option isn’t available, you can still enable it by following these steps. We have to mention that this solution applies only if you’re using ELAN touchpad.

Let me know.

Have a great day!
