Spectre x360 14
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Spectre drops display brightness to 60%(it shows 100% brightness in windows but the display does not change its brightness from the setting from 60% to 100%) when it is unplugged and can no longer go above that brightness unless 2 things happen: 1) Restart the computer with the AC power plugged in 2)Reinstalling the graphics drivers with the AC power plugged in.

Windows 20H2

i7-1165G7

16GB RAM

512GB SSD

Methods that I have tried that did not change anything:

1)Update and reset the BIOS Defaults

2)Uninstall Monitor and Display Adaptor in device manager

3)Turn off all the battery power optimizations for the display in Intel graphics command center

Some theories I have for this:

1)I've seen many articles talking about low brightness on battery and were solved by changing the power plan in power options where in the solutions, you can change the maximum brightness on battery and plugged in however those settings are not available to me in the advanced power plan settings menu. My guess is that those settings were changed so that the max brightness on battery is 60%. Is there any way to change this in the registry?

2)Some HP power-saving feature so that battery life is better

However is these are the reason, why wouldn't the maximum brightness come back up if I replug the AC power?

Update: I found a method that proves that this is a software issue.

if you change the value of the FeatureTestControl to ffff in the Registry in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

the display brightness stays at the full brightness but cannot be changed. If only there were a value in the registry I can change to change the maximum brightness instead of the constant brightness.

@Mr_Admiral

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to change the display brightness to maximum in battery mode.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Have you selected the high performance mode in the power plan and checked?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.

Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.

Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.

Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.

If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.

On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.

Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.

From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.

Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.

From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.

Click on ‘Save changes’ button.

If the issue persists, follow the below steps.

Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.

From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,

Click and open the ‘Power options’.

Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.

Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.

In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.

Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

I have done all of this already. None of these worked. There is also no high performance plan in power options.
