When I wake my HP Envy from sleep mode, the built-in screen often remains gray.
The external monitor works normally at the same time.
It works again after a hard reset.
What could be causing this?

I checked all drivers - seems updated.

What can I do ?

Hi @rsiemens,

Hi, welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your HP ENVY 17 built-in display sometimes stays gray after waking from sleep, while the external monitor continues to work normally. Since a hard reset temporarily restores the display and your drivers are already updated, this can point to the built-in display not initializing correctly when the laptop resumes from sleep.

Here are a few steps you can try:

Perform a power reset

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and any connected devices, including the external monitor.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the computer.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This can help check whether the built-in display or other hardware is contributing to the issue.

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the startup menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run the available component tests, particularly the display-related tests.
  5. Please refer to this link for assistance in running the test

Check Windows power settings

Since the problem occurs specifically after sleep, temporarily changing the sleep behavior can help determine whether the issue is related to Windows power management.

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and temporarily adjust the sleep settings to see if the behavior changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
