COMPAQ Presario CQ56
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello.

I have a laptop  Compaq Presario CQ56. The problem is that on the screen. It works for a while and suddenly a black screen appeared but not so much black but it looks like a desktop. When I connect a monitor from a PC for this screen I do not think it's a problem in the hardware. Could it be a problem in software? If you can help me, I need a laptop.

Thank you in advance for the answer.

@Zahid996,

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with the display going black. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Was there a power outage or surge prior to this occurrence in the recent past?
  • Please provide the complete model# and product# of the computer to assist you better.

For now, try these steps:

Let me keep you posted that the evidence points to a display issue and this is only an attempt to try and resolve the issue. If it does not work the display’s hardware needs to be checked by a local technician.

  • Your step of connecting the computer to an external monitor is not clear.
  • What happens when you connect it to an external monitor? Is there a display on the external monitor?
  • If there is a display on the external monitor, then the notebook’s actual screen is faulty and needs to be replaced by contacting a local technician.
  • I am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.

Please try these steps:

Please perform all the relevant steps that best match your current issue from this link: https://hp.care/2JGvJS5 (HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot)

Perform these steps:

  • Step one: Perform a hard reset
  • Step two: Connect an external monitor to test the display
  • Step three: Disconnect all peripherals and repeat the hard reset.

Also, perform all the other relevant steps.

If the issue persists, then the computer needs to be repaired. If the computer is more than 3 years old then service options with HP are no longer available because the original suppliers and manufacturers who manufacture and supply the parts to HP to build and service the computer don't do so anymore.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Good day. When I connect to an external monitor it works. The only screen in the laptop is darkened, but there is little desktop look. Does it have to do with power supply? If the current is low, can the screen's visibility be reduced on the laptop? It happens to me sometimes to happen when I turn on the charger in the laptops "Connected and does not charge" Can this affect the screen dimming?

It is clear that the internal display is faulty and needs to be replaced.

You could check this document: https://hp.care/2HKIheI (HP Notebook PCs - Display Is Dim or Difficult to Read (Windows 10, 8, 7) and check if this helps.

Otherwise, please contact a local technician in this regard.
