I have a laptop, an HP Pavilion 17t-g100, and the motherboard is crashing. I obtained an i7 motherboard with a Nivia card and installed it, but it doesn't recognize the display, make all the checks, and all is ok with the board. Can it be a problem with the display? because it is 1600x900 and I read that this board uses a display 1920x1080. Is there any solution, or must I buy a new display with a higher resolution? Thanks for the recommendations.

@ViceArman, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for sharing the details about your HP Pavilion 17t-g100 laptop and the motherboard upgrade. You're absolutely right to consider display compatibility, let’s walk through the issue and possible solutions.

You've replaced the original motherboard with one that includes an Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA graphics, but the laptop display (1600x900) is not being recognized. You suspect the new board expects a 1920x1080 panel, which is a valid concern.

Compatibility Checks:

  1. Connector Type: Ensure the display panel uses the same connector type (usually eDP for Pavilion series). If the new motherboard expects dual-lane eDP and your panel is single-lane, it may not initialize properly.
  2. BIOS Initialization: Some boards may fail to POST if the panel’s EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) doesn’t match expected specs.
  3. GPU Output Path: If the NVIDIA GPU is set as primary and the panel is incompatible, the system may default to external display only.

Recommended Steps:

Test with External Display

  • Connect an external monitor via HDMI or VGA.
  • If it boots and displays correctly, the issue is likely with panel compatibility.

Check BIOS Settings

  • If accessible via external display, enter BIOS (Esc or F10 during boot).
  • Look for Display or Graphics settings, some BIOS versions allow switching between integrated and discrete graphics.

Review Panel Specs

  • Use the original panel’s part number (found on the back of the panel) and search its specs online.
  • Compare with the expected panel for the new motherboard (usually listed in HP Maintenance and Service Guide).

Consider Upgrading the Display

If the panel is not compatible:

  • Look for a 1920x1080 eDP panel compatible with Pavilion 17t-g100 chassis.
  • Ensure the connector and mounting points match.

BIOS Update (Optional)

If the board is from a slightly different Pavilion variant, updating BIOS might help with compatibility. Use caution and ensure the BIOS matches the board model.

Summary:

Yes, the issue could be due to resolution or signal lane mismatch. If external display works and BIOS doesn’t help, upgrading to a 1920x1080 panel is likely the best solution.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Thanks for your good explanation, some of the steps you mentioned I already did. I'm going to review the Maintenance and Service Guide to select a better display for the motherboard, because it looks to be the better solution to upgrade the panel.
