Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hi all,
I decided to upgrade my notebook from hdd to ssd, but I installed windows 10 with Legacy support (It was in BIOS on the HDD), and now intel drivers make the display to flicker in windows, if I switch to BIOS mode it flickers also at startup and in BIOS, even with no OS on the drive.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP Notebook - 15-ay139nl and you have upgraded to an SSD and installed Win10. I read that the display screen flickers in Windows and as well as in the BIOS screen. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.

Did this happen only after upgrading to an SSD?

If the display screen flickers in the BIOS then the evidence points towards the hardware. In Windows, it can happen due to the drivers. But in BIOS the drivers are not involved.

I suggest you to contact our HP phone support team to explore the available service options for your HP laptop.

Hope this helps. Feel free to keep me posted for any further questions. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the answer!
Yes, in BIOS mode it flickers also in BIOS, but if I enable Legacy support it doesn't flicker.

Oh and I tried to restore the BIOS with a bootable USB, after the reboot the pc is stucked in a black screen and I can only move the pointer.
Now windows can't boot (it didn't boot also before the BIOS restore), it is stucked at HP logo with a loading signal.
Anyway if I enable Legacy support, it doesn't flicker, but in windows Intel drivers make it to flicker. I am sure this is a Legacy-UEFI problem with drivers support, because it was in Uefi mode when I bought it, and I installed windows in Legacy after the SSD upgrade and made a BIOS upgrade from windows. Can you help me?

Hi,

thank you for replying with the information. I truly appreciate your efforts and patience.

I suggest you to disable the "secure boot" and enable legacy boot and install Windows operating system. Once Windows loads, we will try to troubleshoot the screen flickering issue. We will analyze if the driver needs to be updated or reinstalled in Windows.

Keep me posted. Cheers!

Thanks for the support.

Secure boot was already disabled, and when windows was in Legacy support, I tried to unistall and reinstall Intel drivers, to install amd and intel drivers in a different order, to install Intel drivers from windows update, from intel website, from HP driver page and from the HP tool. Nothing worked. I tried to call HP phone support and they didn't find a solution, they said me that maybe the problem is the SSD, but I tried to install windows on the factory HDD and Intel drivers do the same. At this point I don't know if it is a BIOS problem or something else. If you want me to install windows in legacy support even if I already tried every driver, I can do it, I hope you can solve my problem also because it is no longer under warranty since I opened the pc to mount the ssd.

Thanks for your patience.

You're most welcome.

Let us attempt the following steps:

  • Let Windows install/load in Legacy support.
  • Once Windows is up and running, you may download and run the BIOS update for this laptop via this link.
NOTE: The charger must be connected during the BIOS update.

Hope this works out. Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

I checked the product specifications of your laptop and found that it also has an AMD Radeon™ R7 M440 Graphics card.

We can try to disable the Intel graphics drivers from the device manager and let the laptop work using only the AMD graphic drivers:

  • Open the device manager.
  • Expand "Display adapters".
  • Right-click on the Intel graphics drivers and select disable.

The laptop should work on AMD drivers. Good luck! 🙂

Yes but, why if I disable Legacy support the display flicks also in BIOS? This didn't happen before I switched from HDD to SSD
