14-CF0006DX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop (14-CF0006DX) has always worked with Linux Ubuntu. Since day 1, I erased the entire hard drive (not without making sure Windows 10 was activated and working fine, which it was) and I installed Ubuntu. Since I'm going back to school and I'll be using programs that are only compatible with windows, I'm reinstalling windows 10 (I don't want to run a virtual environment like vmware, etc under Linux). The display will not work with windows 10 (21H1 version). I have to connect it to an external monitor to see the installation and everything. I can’t even see the boot screen on the laptop, everything has to be done with an external monitor. The weird thing is that I reinstalled Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and no problem, it installs and works just fine without a external monitor, I can see the installation and all is OK. So, I don’t think it’s a hardware issue, perhaps a firmware issue? I can’t see the boot screen regardless of which OS I use. I always felt that the laptop was a bit slow to start/initialize but it has always worked fine. Any ideas as to what the problem can be? Thank you for your help.

Alan

PS: Once windows was installed with an external monitor, I have run all the HP diagnostics programs, I have installed and reinstalled all the drivers, etc. I even updated the BIOS firmware and nothing, no errors, just a black display.

Since you have apparently only tried Win10 v21H1, I have to presume that version is the issue -- as other folks here have reported similar issues when they Upgraded their PCs from 20H2 to 21H1.  The previous video drivers, which were working fine, no longer worked under 21H1.

I wrote this tutorial about how to get an ISO of whatever Windows build you want -- so my advice is to use it to get a 19042.985 build ISO and try using that instead:  https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Knowledge-Base/Getting-older-builds-of-Windows-10-from-Micro...

Hi,

I have tried 20H2, and 1909 and they did not work. Same problem. Everything works in an external monitor, it does not work in the laptop's screen. I believe this laptop came with 1909, I can't remember for sure. At any rate it does not work. This laptop while entry level, is not that old. I'm at a loss.

I wish I had a solution -- but I do not.

It's clearly a driver issue; otherwise, if it was hardware, the screen would not work under Linux.

I know HP had not updated drivers for some laptops for some time -- in the case of mine, for 10 years now -- so if the older drivers will not work with any newer Win 10 versions, you are basically stuck.
