I own an HP Pavilion laptop and it works fine, whenever I plug it into an external monitor and play games on it my laptop screen turns black which makes it difficult for streaming videos or whatever I would like to use the second screen for.

Hi @bokodlo1,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

It sounds like your HP Pavilion laptop is experiencing a display conflict when connected to an external monitor during gaming, causing the internal screen to go black. This can be frustrating, especially if you're trying to stream or multitask.

Let’s walk through some steps to help resolve this:

1. Check Display Mode

  • Press Windows + P to open the Project menu.
  • Select “Extend” to use both screens.
  • If it’s set to “Second screen only”, your laptop screen will go black.

2. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters.
  • Right-click your GPU (Intel/NVIDIA/AMD) and choose Update driver.
  • Or download the latest drivers from HP or the GPU manufacturer’s site.

3. Disable Full-Screen Optimization

  • Right-click the game’s shortcut > Properties > Compatibility tab.
  • Check “Disable full screen optimizations”.
  • This can prevent Windows from switching display modes during gameplay.

4. Check GPU Settings

  • If you have NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Software, check:
    • Display settings.
    • Multi-monitor configuration.
    • Power management mode (set to Prefer maximum performance).

5. Use Windowed or Borderless Mode in Games

  • Some games force full-screen on the external monitor.
  • Try switching to Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode in game settings.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved, and if you feel this reply was helpful, click “Yes”.
