I have purchased a VGA splitter for my 2 monitors however because this is connected to the laptop it is only recognising both screens as the same i.e. No.2 display and the laptop as No.1. I was wondering how I can recognise these Monitors as No. 2 and No.3 so I can move things around and have different displays on each screen. Will a docking station work? If so is there one that is compatible to this notebook?

What is your HP Pavilion dv6. 2 monitors come from one source will give you same display. Older HP Pavilion dv6 normally has 2 video out ports. I need to know what is your HP Pavilion dv6. Please use the following way to find out the model/product of your machine
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108
For security reason, please do NOT post its Serial number (s/n) on Internet.
Dock option is OK but you need am old style dock which may not work on new machines.
Regards.

Its specs
https://support.hp.com/ph-en/document/c02763324
It only has
- 1 VGA
- 2 headphone-out
- 1 microphone-in
- 2 USB 2.0
- 2 USB 3.0
- 1 RJ45
It does not have docking port you can use USB docks to connect to 2 monitors. You can use
(a) Cheap one: (I bought A$70 on eBay)
(b) Or the second one on the following link

Regards.

Ok so with the cheaper version of the docking station found on ebay I basically would connect each monitor via USB port to the doc and then connect the doc to the laptop via vga port? This will give me three extended screens? Sorry not that IT savvy.

No, you have to connect the dock to one USB port on computer and connect 2 monitors to two DVI ports on the dock. You can use direct DVI to HDMI cables to HDMI or DVI ports on 2 monitors (best option) or use small (DVI-VGA) converters to VGA ports on 2 monitors
