I have a docking station that connects to the USB-C port on my laptop so that I can use two additional monitors. The docking station is not being recognized by the USB-C port and I get the warning, Display Connection Might Be Limited. I realize my device may be considered "old" but does that mean I can't connect a docking station to it? Not sure what to do.

Hi @LHulbert

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when you connect a docking station expecting extra monitors to work smoothly, only to see a “Display Connection Might Be Limited” warning. Thank you for already checking the setup—it shows real persistence. Let’s walk through what’s happening and the best way forward.

Many HP laptops have USB‑C ports that support data transfer and charging but not video output. If your system’s USB‑C port does not include DisplayPort functionality, then the docking station cannot send video signals to external monitors through that port. That’s why you’re seeing the limitation message.

Here are steps you can take:

Confirm your laptop’s USB‑C capabilities

Use the HDMI port on your laptop

  • Connect one monitor directly to the laptop’s HDMI port.
  • If you need more than one external display, you may need to use a docking solution that connects via HDMI or USB‑A for peripherals, while video continues through the laptop’s native HDMI.

HP docking options

  • HP USB‑C/A Universal Dock G2 or HP USB‑C Dock G5 are reliable choices. These provide USB and network expansion, while video output is handled through the laptop’s HDMI port if your USB‑C does not support video.

Windows display settings

  • Right‑click on the desktop → Display settings.
  • Ensure the monitors are detected and arranged correctly.
  • If only one monitor is detected, it confirms the USB‑C port is not passing video.

To summarize: your docking station is not faulty, but your laptop’s USB‑C port may not support video output. Using the HDMI port for one monitor and an HP dock for peripherals is the most stable solution.
