Did anyone get the video output of the Pavilion 14T DV000 get to work with a USB-C dock via the USB-C port that has the lightening bolt next to it?  I did read a post from 1-9-2021 below.  My Bios has the latest.  I updated the intel video driver.  Still not working.

Request you to follow the below troubleshooting steps that should fix the issue.

 

  1. Update the HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors)
  1. Intel® Driver & Support Assistant  the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics, drivers 
  1. Windows Update.

What is your Pavilion 14T DV000 ?  It should have same ports of the following machine

 

              HP Pavilion Laptop 14-dv0009TU

 

It has 1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 10Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge) port. You can use this port to Charge your machine using USB-C charger rating 45W or above.  You can also use it to connect to USB-C monitor or a monitor with DP input port or USB-C to HDMI (some times this won't work).

Banhien - Thank you for the reply.  The product number of my laptop is 9WF38AV.  The USB-C port has the thunderbolt next to it on the silk screening for that port (See first picture attachment). 

 

There are errors seen on the USB diagnostics as I click into it (see second picture with errors highlighted in red) .  It indicates the Thunderbolt devices using the USB-C port configuration are not currently supported.  It also states the graphics card  is not currently supported.  

 

The questions I have are: 

 

1. Was this unit not configured from the HP factory for the Intel IRIS Xe graphics card not being connected to the USB-C Thunderbolt port?

2. If this laptop was set up to work with the USB-C Thunderbolt port, is this a hardware failure in the Intel IRIS Xe graphics card connection to this USB-C Thunderbolt port?  The HDMI port on the laptop does provide HDMI video out to my 1080p Samsung monitors.  Why would the HDMI video output port work and not provide HDMI video out over the USB-C thunderbolt port?  Is that not coming from the same Intel IRIS Xe graphics card? 

3. I did update the Intel IRIS Xe SW driver twice, third picture has the latest SW version.  Both SW versions did not fix the problem.  So I am presuming the core problem is either question 1 or 2 above.   

 

Let me know what you and the HP team thoughts are?

Your machine is a CTO machine. Machine has

 

  • Hot plug/unplug and autodetect for correct output to wide-aspect vs. standard aspect video HDMI v2.0 + HDCP 2.2 supporting: up to 4096 × 2160 @ 60 Hz
  • Audio-out (headphone)/audio-in (microphone) combo jack
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (supports data transfer, power delivery, HP Sleep & Charge;  (a)
  • DisplayPort 1.4 out up to 4096 × 2304 @ 60 Hz through adapter;
  • HDMI 2.0 out up to 3840 × 2160 @ 60 Hz with HDCP 2.2 through adapter)

(a) That port is not a Thunderbolt port,  the lighting symbol does not mean Thunderbolt.

Banhien - Thank you for your reply.  I read discrepancies in the HP documentation about the specifications of what is supported and what is not.

 

Specs I read about my laptop as per the HP service guide for that USB-C port 3.2 gen 2

So I understand HP is using the lightening bolt to represent power delivery for that port.  It is not meant to represent the Thunderbolt symbol and all the industry standards for support of a Thunderbolt port.  So can I charge and run the laptop through that USB-C port using a USB-C dock with Power Delivery granted the correct DC voltage and current is provided without having the HP AC-DC power adapter connected to the cylindrical DC power port?   

 

Why do you and fellow tech support folks just say what the lightening bolt means instead of what it does not mean and what is supported?  I read many posts questioning the lightening bolt on USB-C ports on HP laptops.  

 

So I am asking clarification on what the USB-C 3.2 gen 2 supports.  You mention it supports super speed data transfers, power delivery, HP sleep n Charge.  The next two bullets below the USB-C port description are in your reply:

 

  • DisplayPort 1.4 out up to 4096 × 2304 @ 60 Hz through adapter;
  • HDMI 2.0 out up to 3840 × 2160 @ 60 Hz with HDCP 2.2 through adapter;

 Are these two protocols supported through the USB-C port via an adapter?   Please confirm for that would help understand what was configured to order (CTO) as you mention in other posts what CTO means and specifically what my CTO laptop supports.  

 

I see you lead with this HDMI bullet below which I believe is meant support through the HDMI port.

Thank you for letting me know that HDCP control protocol version 2.2 is supported through the HDMI port and the USB-C port.  That would be good information to have in both user and service guides.  

 

So does the Intel IRIS Xe GPU support all the video outputs (HDMI & USB-C ports) on this CTO HP laptop and not use any Video outputs that are part of the Intel SOC?  Please clarify in answering this for this would answer my original questions I sent to you about HW and/or SW failures with my CTO laptop.

Thank you for your tech support and letting me know all video is routed through the Intel IRIS Xe GPU and out to the respective USB-C and HDMI ports.  So I was able to test the Pavilion Laptop with a simple USB-C to display port adapter and 1m display port cable that worked on my Samsung and Dell monitors.  I also tested with a simple USB-C to HDMI port adapter and 1m HDMI cable that worked as well on my Samsung and Dell monitors.  

 

So the error on the USB diagnostics screen regarding the "USB-C port on the GPU card is not currently supported" is not accurate.  I suggest you work with the development group and find out why this USB-C  error is presented on my laptop screen.

Please let Malcolm know this as well.  He informed me that the HP shopping group / USB-C  folks would have a list of compatible USB-C docks for my HP laptop.  I did reach out to that group and they did not have a list of multiple USB-C docks that are compatible.  They only had one dock that was in the 400 USD price range that is about the same price I paid for this laptop.  

 

Looking to get feedback on why that USB-C message is being presented on my HP when running the USB diagnostics even though I am getting HDMI and Display port video our that port through a simple USB-C adapter and 1m cable.

All USB-C ports are not the same therefore all cables/adapters are not the same. All vendors say they use standard but I always put a question mark to those claims.

 

I used to have a facility to test and did not have to spend money to buy (just borrow). I retired 4 years ago therefore I can't borrow hardware for  any test now.

 

Hope HP engineers to look at this post and publish more information from their end.

Banhien - Thank you for your reply.  Yes I know all USB-C ports are not the same even though we have standardization.  Interop tests are needed as you say when you had your lab.  I too do many interop tests on all types of standards in my career.  Good news I called the Dell customer support regarding the D6000 universal dock.  They provided me with an updated SW patch for their dock.  That patch along with display port v1.2 driver fixed the video problem with that dock.  I am not able to use both the HDMI and Display port outputs and get video out of the HP laptop's USB-C port and working with Samsung and Dell monitors that have HDMI and Display ports.

Banhien- The one sentence should read I am now able to get HDMI and Display port video out the my HP laptop through the USB-C port and the Dell D6000 Dock onto my various Samsung and Dell monitors.
