My duplicate/extend/2nd display functions have stopped working. Before answering, know that I have:
-rebooted
-tried six different HDMI and USB to HDMI cables
-tried multiple 2nd screen tvs and monitors
-updated drivers, and deleted and reinstalled drivers (all are up to date)
-run HP diagnostics
-dusted the ports
-checked for updates
-read all of the forums on here about display problems (apparently, multiple people have this issue)
-held my mouth right
-said a prayer
-used witching rods
... none of which have worked. Not long ago, all I had to do was plug in the HDMI and the duplicate monitor automatically started without pressing function/F4. Now, the duplicate display remains undetected and will not register. If you have any new solutions besides what I have already done, I am all ears. Thank you

Hi @Orpflog50,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’ve already tried a comprehensive list of troubleshooting steps for your duplicate display issue.
Here are a few more advanced troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Check Display Settings:
- Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
- Click on Detect to see if Windows can find the second monitor.
- Ensure that the Multiple displays drop-down is set to Duplicate or Extend.
2. Check Graphics Settings:
- Right-click on the desktop and open Graphics Properties or NVIDIA Control Panel (if you have an NVIDIA GPU).
- Ensure that the display settings for multiple monitors are configured correctly.
3. Rollback or Reinstall GPU Drivers:
- Sometimes the latest drivers can cause issues. Go to Device Manager, right-click on your graphics adapter under Display adapters, and select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Alternatively, uninstall the driver and then reinstall it from the manufacturer's website.
4. Check Display Port Configuration in BIOS:
- Sometimes settings in BIOS can affect how the display ports work. Restart your laptop and enter BIOS (usually by pressing F2, F10, or DEL during startup).
- Check if there are any settings related to the display or video output that might be disabled.
5. Run Windows Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to see if it detects any issues.
6. Update BIOS:
- Check if there’s a BIOS update available for your laptop model on the HP support website. An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause display issues.
7. Check for Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and ensure that your system is fully updated.
8. Inspect HDMI/USB Ports and Cables:
- Ensure that the HDMI and USB ports and cables are free from debris and not damaged. Sometimes subtle issues with connections can cause detection problems.
9. Factory Reset as a Last Resort:
- If all else fails and you’re sure it’s not a hardware problem, you might consider backing up your data and performing a factory reset to rule out any software issues.
