It might be useful to lubricate the hinge as I suspect that caused the problem.
This discussion is about using a toothpick to lubricate a MacBook hinge.
Or just do a general search

I notified a moderator. Some newer laptops can have the hinge repaired by HP even if out of warranty.  It depends on the model, the location and how old it is.

Thank you for the suggestions - my laptop is 7 months old.

If you did not register your product with HP when you bought it then the warranty you are seeing is based on date of manufacture, not date of purchase. You can update the warranty status by contacting HP and providing a proof of purchase.   Let me know if you need to do this.

My laptop was purchased 7 months ago.  Is the broken hinge and display be covered under the warranty?

Support would look at the hinge to see if it failed.  Depending on where you got it there might be a no questions asked return policy.  eg:  Costco or Sams come to mind.

I hate to mention it, but the damage could be caused by accidently leaving a pencil, a coin, keys, or some object  near that hinge when closing the lid with force.   That would only be covered if a policy for accidental damage was purchased.   However, hinge damage is easy to spot:  Difficulty opening / closing and the hinge shows evidence from pushing out from the inside of the laptop. A object left in the hinge area would show pressing in.  I am just guessing as to what tech service would look at.
