Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb1000 (7Y8M8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I deleted a "Biometric Devices" driver and now I can't use facial recognition in Windows Hello.

I was trying to fix the fingerprint scanner (device wouldn't start) and first removed the "Synaptics UWP WBDI" in device manager. When it didn't re-appear I also removed another device in "Biometric Devices". Now both disappeared. When I chose "rescan for hardware changes", the fingerprint scanner re-appeared and I got it to work, the other device didn't.

I tried:

- HP drivers (not there)

- windows update

- HP support assistant

- updating the "HP IR Camera" software in device manager

Can anybody tell the name of the biometric device that I removed, and/or show me where to find the driver.

Thanks!

Hi @Akash1203,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the exact model and for explaining what happened. I rechecked the support information for the Victus by HP 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb1000 (7Y8M8AV), and you're correct: HP does not currently list a separate downloadable driver specifically for the missing biometric/Windows Hello device on the model's driver page.

Since the fingerprint device returned after a hardware scan but the device you removed for facial recognition did not, I would avoid installing unrelated drivers or removing any additional devices.

Please try these steps:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Select View > Show hidden devices
  3. Check Cameras, Biometric devices, and Imaging devices
  4. Also look under Other devices for an Unknown device or anything with a yellow warning mark.
  5. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart the notebook.
  6. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates for anything related to the camera or biometric device.

The HP IR Camera is important here because Windows Hello facial recognition requires a compatible infrared camera.

I would not recommend manually installing a generic camera driver, as Windows notes that a standard camera driver may restore basic camera functionality but can prevent Windows Hello Face from working.

Could you please send us a photo/screenshot of Device Manager with “Show hidden devices” enabled, showing the Cameras, Biometric devices, and Other devices sections? That will help us identify what is currently missing and determine the next appropriate step.

Once we can see what Windows is detecting, we'll try to help you restore the Windows Hello facial-recognition function without making further unnecessary driver changes.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
