Extended desktop with UHD Monitor - fail - screen flashes on and off every few seconds

HP Recommended
EliteBook 1040 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Should my EliteBook 1040 G3 be able to run extended desktop on a UHD Monitor as it doesn't seem to cope, the screen flashes on and off every few seconds when displaying desktop, and fails completely if I move a spreadsheet onto it...

Thanks

@XavierLewis

Its specs

            https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04936028#AbT13

It has

  • USB 3.0 charging port - 2
  • USB-Type C charging port (15 W) - 1
  • Docking connector -1
  • HDMI 1.4 - 1
  • Headphone / microphone combo - 1
  • Multi-Pin AC Port (4.5 mm) - 1

How do you connect it to your UHD external monitor ?

Regards.
