OMEN by HP 15-dc1021ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello Community,

I'm currently looking for an external monitor for work/office tasks. But the more I dived into topic the more questions popped up.

My current system is the HP OMEN 15 dc-1021ng (see official HP specifications).

I first checked, if my system can run 1 or more monitors at 4K 60 Hz:

So I should be able to run at least one 4K monitor easily and could maybe add a second 4K-monitor with daisy chain function or via another laptop port in the future.

Is this correct?

There're also questions regarding my laptop ports because the official HP specs. (see first link) appear to be false and/or incomplete. Further they don't fit the information in the maintenance guide :

  • According to the official specs (first link) I have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 type C with thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s, DP 1.4) and a mini DP

But in fact I own the version with a USB-type C port (without Thunderbolt) on the rear.

According to the maintenance guide my ports are:

  • USB 3.1 Gen 1 with DP-Alt mode (DP 1.2 up to 4096 x 2304 at 60 Hz)
  • mini DP (no further information)
  • HDMI 2.0 (up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz with HDCP 2.2)

Now I would like to have somebody from HP, who could verify me the information on the ports and give me additional information on them, as only stating a version number doesn't include automatically all the features possible for the respective standard.

  1. Which version is my mini DP? Which transmission speed (HBR) does it support?
I have found posts of other Omen users indicating the mini DP is 1.4. As far as I know there're in fact only the mini DP versions 1.1 and 1.2 (Wikipedia, Cablematters). But it might be just termed 1.4 because it supports features from the DP 1.4 standard.
Therefore, I'd like to know if my miniDP supports DSC, HDR and possible other features (including the respective version number of the feature, e.g. DSC 1.2 or 1.2a)
  2. What USB-C port does my laptop have on the rear:
    1. Version, Gen, transmission speed (Gb/s)
    2. DP-ALT mode: Correct DP-version; HBR per lane; support of DSC, HDR and possible other features
  3. HDMI: Version, bandwidth (Gb/s), support of DSC, HDR and possible other features

I'm already sorry for this long post. But I hope it makes it easier for somebody to help me and to reduce the exchange of unnecessary information at the same time.

So today I got in touch with the HP Support via their messenger to answer at least the questions to my ports:

  1. Which version is my mini DP? Which transmission speed (HBR) does it support? ...
... Therefore, I'd like to know if my miniDP supports DSC, HDR and possible other features (including the respective version number of the feature, e.g. DSC 1.2 or 1.2a)
  2. What USB-C port does my laptop have on the rear:

    2. DP-ALT mode: Correct DP-version; HBR per lane; support of DSC, HDR and possible other features
  3. HDMI: Version, bandwidth (Gb/s), support of DSC, HDR and possible other features

I also mentioned this post here. But instead of using these questions here and providing me all answers at ounce, it was a long enduring question by question chat. I still believe that I was chatting with an AI.
After a long chat I got every information on the three ports (version and supported features). But as there're variants of this model posting it doesn't make much sense.

In conclusion if you want to get this information, you have to endure the Support. 😑

At least she/it was friendly and patient.^^

@Dolus7

I do not have a 4K monitor to test but I tested on my 4K TV with my Omen 15-dc machine using miniDP to HDMI 2 cable.

I used VLC to run a MKV 4K youtube and they worked. I don't know the difference between 4K monitor and 4K TV

Regards.

Thank you for your reply @Banhien

I've already tried to use a pure HDMI cable connected to my TV to watch a 4K Youtube video. But it wasn't quite fluent. I think it's the cable's fault because it's an older cable ("High Speed HDMI"), which is restricted to 4K@30Hz.

That your miniDP to HDMI 2 cable works fluently would at least indicate that the miniDP supports 4k — at least I understand it that way.

If both, monitor and TV, support 4k and/or the same features, I would assume that there's no difference. But it depends for sure on the used ports, I think.
