External HDMI display issue

HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi there

I purchased a HP Pavilion 15-eh0523sa on Tuesday, with Windows 11. For the first time I hooked it up to my Dell projector to watch a film. However, I noticed the sound was pretty poor and tinny when connected to my hi-fi through the headphone jack. I double checked on my headphones and it was the same issue.

I searched the forums and downloaded the AMD Cleanup Utility. Once this finished and restarted, the sound was better, but distorted. I restarted once more and the sound was fine.

However, the HDMI signal was no longer being received by the projector. I checked the laptop with my tv and the same thing. I hooked my Xbox up to the projector and there was no problem, so the issue is definitely with the laptop.

I went into HP Support and it suggested I download the latest graphic driver, which I did (about 730mb in size). Once installed and restarted the projector was now showing the image. However, the sound had resorted back to the tinny sound again. I tried the AMD Clean Up again which fixed the sound issue, but  knocked out the HDMI once again. HP recommended to install the same graphics driver, which suggests it had been uninstalled by AMD, but I installed again. It solved the visual issue but put me back to square one with the sound. So essentially, I’m stuck in a loop of poor sound with HDMI visual, or good sound with no HDMI visual.

I have also downloaded and installed the latest BIOS update from the HP website.

At a bit of a loss as to what to do next - if anyone can help that would be a great help.

Update:

No idea  If this is a hardware or software problem. I managed to get the sound and visual fixed on the laptop by upgrading the chipset. However, as soon as I connect my hi-fi to the headphone jack the sound goes bad once again - and on the laptop (when I check on headphones). By bad sound I mean tinny with no bass.

Restarting solves the issue on the laptop, so I can hear good audio on headphones, but it seems I can’t get good audio to play on an external source.
