HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-ch0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
  1. I have connected an external Display DELL U2711 via HDMI and can't get above 1920x1080 via the standard resolution menu.
  2. When entering in the Intel Graphics setting a custom resolution of 2560x1440 it's working.
However - HP/Intel hint's that custom resolution may damage the graphic card, overheat, cause failure, reduce life of chipset, .... So when reading that I doubt it's a good idea? And in fact, the fan is running full speed since then...

My question - as I bought a hell expensive machine which I wanted to be future proof:

How can I get on an external monitor the resolution of 2560x1440 (which btw my 4 year old Surface Pro can do via Display Port) without "stressing" Intel Graphic Card?

Buy a USB-C (Thunderbolt) to Display Port converter? As also Dell suggests higher/native 2560x1440 resolution only with Display Port...

Any hint/response is truly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi,

The monitor supports natively 1080 FHD resolution via HDMI. The problem is not the PC as your model has HDMI v2.0 and can support : up to 4096×2160 at 60 Hz

So the native resolution for the Dell HDMI is 1900x1080 and this is what the computer picks up.

Now you can force with custom resolution and it shouild not create problems.

A better option is to use a USB to DP port adapter or a USB-C docking station with DP ports.

"All ports support data transfer, power delivery and Display Port 1.2 out up to 3840×2160 (60Hz)"

You can see on page 2 of service manual:
