I have an HP 15.6 laptop 15-d5000 (brand new), and 2 HP M27h FHD monitors (also brand new). I need to connect the 2 monitors to the laptop to extend my work space. I do not want to mirror my laptop. I need for the monitors to extend and be able to have different displays on each screen. I was told to purchase this
’Targus Portable USB-C dock with dual 4k HDMI/RJ45/GbE/SD Reader PD Pass Thru’ model # Dock423A.
after being on the phone for over an hour and with remote support, updating windows, uninstalling and reinstalling display drivers, refreshing , etc, I was told that my laptop doesn’t support this dock ( even though before purchasing), I was told that this would be all that I needed to complete the task.
Can anyone help me please.
the laptop has a usb-c port, as well as only 1 hdmi port. Thank you

Hi @Budman1109,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you've experienced in setting up your dual monitor workspace. Let's try to find a solution for connecting your HP 15.6 laptop to the two HP M27h FHD monitors with the constraints and equipment you've described.
Given your laptop has a single USB-C port and one HDMI port, and considering the Targus Portable USB-C Dock (Dock423A) you were advised to purchase isn't compatible with your laptop, there are a few alternative approaches you can consider to achieve an extended dual-monitor setup.
1. Direct Connection + USB-C Dock (Alternative to Targus Dock423A)
Direct Connection for Monitor 1:
- Connect the first monitor directly to your laptop using the HDMI port. This will serve as your first extended display.
Alternative USB-C Dock for Monitor 2:
- For the second monitor, since the Targus Dock423A didn't work for you, consider looking for a USB-C dock or adapter that is confirmed to be compatible with your HP laptop model. Ensure the dock supports dual-display output and check for compatibility with HP laptops or specifically with the HP 15-d5000 series.
- Connect the dock to your laptop's USB-C port and then connect the second monitor to the dock using an HDMI cable (or another appropriate cable depending on the dock's output ports).
2. USB-C to Dual HDMI Adapter
If finding a compatible dock is challenging or if you prefer a simpler setup, a USB-C to dual HDMI adapter might be a solution. These adapters are designed to take a single USB-C connection and split it into two HDMI outputs. When shopping for such an adapter:
- Look for one that explicitly states compatibility with Windows 11 and supports extended display modes (not just mirroring).
- Ensure your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, as this is required for the adapter to carry video signals.
3. DisplayLink USB Dock or Adapter
DisplayLink technology allows for USB devices to manage video output. If your laptop's USB-C port doesn't support DisplayPort Alt Mode or if other solutions aren't viable, a DisplayLink USB dock or adapter can be an alternative. These devices connect to a USB port (including USB-C with an adapter, if necessary) and can manage multiple displays. Look for a DisplayLink-certified dock that supports multiple HDMI outputs and is compatible with Windows 11.
Additional Tips:
- Check Compatibility: Before purchasing any dock or adapter, verify its compatibility with your specific laptop model and operating system (Windows 11).
- Driver Updates: Ensure all drivers (especially USB-C and graphics drivers) are up to date on your laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
