Hi @Sakii3 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Product. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

It sounds like you've already done a lot of troubleshooting, but let me offer some more targeted suggestions for your issue.

Possible Causes and Solutions for FPS Drops When Plugged In

Check for Thermal Throttling: When plugged in, laptops tend to run at higher power levels, which can lead to overheating. The system may throttle down the performance to prevent overheating, causing FPS drops.

Steps to check:

  • Monitor the CPU and GPU temperatures using software like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner.
  • If temperatures are too high (above 85-90°C), try cleaning the laptop fans and vents or repasting the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.
  • Consider using a cooling pad to improve airflow.

Check for Power Limit Throttling (PL1/PL2): Older laptops can sometimes have power limit throttling when plugged in, reducing the performance to stay within power limits.

Steps to check:

  • Use Throttlestop to monitor whether your laptop is hitting power limits (PL1/PL2) when plugged in.
  • You can adjust or disable certain throttling limits via Throttlestop, but be cautious and understand the risks of overriding power limits.

Ensure the Laptop is Using the Dedicated GPU (MX150): Sometimes, the system might switch to the integrated Intel UHD Graphics when plugged in, leading to lower performance.

Steps to ensure GPU is being used:

  • In the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Manage 3D Settings, and make sure the preferred graphics processor is set to the NVIDIA MX150.
  • You can also set the specific game you're playing to always use the dedicated GPU.

Update BIOS/Chipset Drivers: Even though you've updated drivers, sometimes BIOS or chipset updates contain fixes for power delivery and thermal management.

Steps to update:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check for any BIOS or chipset driver updates for your Pavilion 15-ck047tx.

Check for AC Adapter Power Delivery: You mentioned trying a 90W adapter, which was a good move, but ensure that the adapter is indeed working correctly and delivering the expected power.

Steps to check:

  • Use HP Hardware Diagnostics to check if your adapter is providing the correct wattage. Sometimes, even though it says 90W, it may not be delivering the full power.
  • Try borrowing a different, verified working 90W or 65W HP adapter (whichever is specified for your model) to see if it makes a difference.

Disable Intel Turbo Boost: Sometimes, disabling Intel Turbo Boost when plugged in can smooth out performance and prevent sudden CPU spikes that may lead to throttling.

Steps to disable:

  • Go to the Power Options in Windows > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management, and set Maximum processor state to 99%.

Try Lowering In-Game Settings: If none of the above works, reducing in-game settings (especially on older hardware like the MX150) may help stabilize the performance when plugged in.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
