HP G62-340US
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Thanks in advance for anyone who views this, I  truly appreciate it.

HP G62-340US Laptop

I would like to know if replacing the LCD will fix this problem or if it's not worth the cost and labor; my budget for a new laptop would be around $600, but I would much rather repair this one if possible.

TL;DRRed and Cyan DistortionsRed and Cyan Distortions

  • G62 Display shows red and cyan streaks over black and white
  • External LCD connected via VGA and Mirrored

  • Laptop display shows distortions, External LCD does not

Pictured below (taken with a potato, no screenshots), the laptop's display is behind the old LCD I connected through the G62's external VGA port. The displays are mirrored. When using them as extended desktops, the laptop's screen still shows the error while the old monitor remains perfect. I have been using the laptop with its screen disabled and the external LCD as the main display with no distortion ever appearing on the external monitor.

You need one of these:

39.6-cm (15.6-in) high definition, Brightview, display panel (includes display panel cable) 595130-001

Download link for your service manual

See pages 70-75 just for familiarity but the Manual does not show how techs in the field actually replace a screen panel.

This is the "right" way i.e. the way I do it:

How about $40 with shipping?

Well you already have done the troubleshooting I recommend. The fact that it displays fine on an external monitor but has artifacts on the internal screen panel proves its the panel and not the videocard/motherboard. Screen replacement would fix it. A replacement panel for that laptop would be no more than $50-60 US in the USA but we would need to know where you live (country) to find one you can actually get delivered. We can find a youtube video showing replacement techique. it is not as difficult as you fear. The laptop is getting some serious age on it and investing even $60 US into it might not be the best idea but as I said it can be done and we stand ready to assist.

Thanks so much for the speedy response! I live in East Tennessee (zip 37641). I know any amount invested in such an old device is not the best idea, but it's still working perfectly for the purposes necessary, so I can't bring myself to upgrade.

I'm ready to repair this sucker!
