HP Spectre 15-bl012dx x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I was having a great experience with my 15" x360. I needed virtualization features, so I upgraded my Windows version to Pro. I also have to enable the virtualization feature in the BIOS.

Everything was great. Then a windows update happend an after a day or so, my desktop would show random shakes. It always happens below where my mouse it. It would show blocks once in a while, but mostly shakes and mostly below the mouse. Though sometimes the entire screen will shake.

I tried following the FAQ on the device page, and there was a Screen_Fix.exe I downloaded. I followed the instructions for a hard reboot, boot into safe-mode, and run the EXE. Things were good.

Then Windows updated itself again, then the shaking came back. I tried the Screen_Fix.exe method and no luck. I tried the latest video drivers on the HP support page and still no luck.

I do have the latest nVidia drivers as I need them for the eGPU setup I have (1070).

Does anyone have any advice? I love this thing and the thunderbolt 3 part is great.

I do have an extended warranty on this laptop so I can always switch it out I suppose, but I rather not.

I called support and they ran me through the process of making sure the drivers were up to date and working. They let me see if it fixed it and they called back as promised to see the status. After letting them know it didn't help, they ask to see if it happens at the BIOS (it did).

They had me send in the laptop and they fixed it (replaced the screen as the connector was bad) within a couple days.

Great service and back to enjoying this great setup!

I seem to have found the problem/solution:

Microsoft had an article reccommending some solutions. It said to bring up task manager and see if it flickers. If it does not, it is an application problem. If the task manager DOES flicker, it is the application.

Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows 10

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12374/windows-10-troubleshoot-screen-flickering

Task Manager didn't flicker at all when I had it up, so I became impatient and figured it was the application. The only application that runs all the time on this machine is Chrome so I looked up claims/bugs of this sort.

Google Chrome causes screen flickering on Windows 10

Lag when scrolling/loading

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/n8e6z3b4dmk

Both Chrome annoyances went away when "Hardware Acceleration" was disabled. I went ahead and disabled it on Chrome and there have been no screen flickers and the scrolling on Facebook and other sites is no longer laggy.

I hope this comes up in search results and that it helps others.

Looks like I spoke too soon. The glitches that happen below the mouse location seemed to have gone away, but the entire screen will shift over once in a while (not as often as before). I made sure to keep "Task Manager" up and that would shift over for a half second or so as well. As per Microsoft, this is most likely a driver malfunction. I'm not sure it's the Intel Graphics or the nVidia Graphics I have to update. I've tried updating the driver from the HP site and no luck. I figured I would try the drivers from the Intel site. Will report here.

The drivers from the Intel site refused to install and said to install from the manufacturer's site. So tried installing the ones on the site, again. Something to note is that the driver release dates are roughly about the same between the HP site and Intel site.

Restarted as told by the driver installation. No luck. Still get random shifting screen and wierd glitches.

I have a year warranty on this laptop in additon to a 2-year protection plan from Best Buy, so I may have to give up this laptop which has been a dream otherwise. Really, disappointed. I'll take it to Best Buy, see if they can fix it. If not, I'll get a replacement.
