Hello, my problem is that when I change the GPU mode from hybrid to discrete and restart the computer, the screen remains black and I have to connect an external monitor to be able to see my computer.

Hi @dsfewr32,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
When you switch your Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop from hybrid mode to discrete GPU mode and the internal display goes black, but an external monitor works, it indicates an issue with the display output settings or the internal display connection. Here are some steps to diagnose and fix this issue:
1. Update GPU Drivers
Ensure you have the latest drivers for both the integrated and discrete GPUs.
- Download the latest drivers from the NVIDIA or AMD website for your discrete GPU and from the Intel or AMD website for your integrated GPU.
- Install the drivers and reboot your laptop.
2. Update BIOS/UEFI
An outdated BIOS/UEFI can sometimes cause issues with GPU switching.
- Go to the HP support website.
- Search for your laptop model and check for any available BIOS/UEFI updates.
- Follow the instructions to download and install the update.
3. Check Display Settings
When the screen goes black, try the following:
- Connect the external monitor and make sure you can see the display.
- Press Win + P to bring up the display projection options.
- Cycle through the options (Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only, PC screen only) to see if the internal display comes back.
4. Reset Display Configuration
Resetting the display settings can sometimes resolve this issue.
- Open Device Manager: Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click on the integrated GPU and select Disable device. Do the same for the discrete GPU.
- Enable the discrete GPU first, then the integrated GPU.
5. Switch Back to Hybrid Mode
If the issue persists, switch back to hybrid mode temporarily:
- Reboot your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup).
- Change the GPU mode back to hybrid.
- Save changes and restart.
Kindly find the next steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @dsfewr32,
Please find the next steps below.
6. Adjust Power Settings
Sometimes, power settings can affect GPU switching.
- Open the Control Panel and go to Power Options.
- Select your current power plan and click on Change plan settings.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Switchable Dynamic Graphics and make sure the settings are appropriate for both On battery and Plugged in.
7. Test in Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists.
- Open the Settings app and go to Update & Security.
- Click on Recovery, then under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click Restart.
- Choose to start in Safe Mode with Networking.
- Once in Safe Mode, try switching the GPU mode again.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially fix the issue with your laptop's display when switching from hybrid to discrete GPU mode.
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider contacting HP phone support for further assistance, as it might be a hardware-related issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
