Hi everyone,
I have an HP ENVY 14 notebook that's over 4 years old. Recently, I've been experiencing constant flickering green pixels across the laptop screen. The issue appeared overnight – there was no drop or physical damage involved, so I can rule that out.
The problem does not appear on an external monitor connected to the laptop. That's why I believe this is not a GPU or software issue, but more likely a hardware problem related to the internal display or its connection. Could it be that a cable inside the laptop has come loose?
Has anyone experienced a similar issue and/or has any advice?
Here are two short videos showing the issue (excuse the reflections, I recorded them from the glossy screen):

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Gurkenesser
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Green flickering pixels on your HP ENVY 14 notebook's internal display could indicate a hardware issue related to the display panel, display cable, or connectors. Since the issue doesn’t appear on an external monitor, we can rule out GPU or software problems. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Quick Checks
- Verify Connections: Ensure that the display cable connections to both the system board and the display panel are secure. Loose connections can cause display anomalies.
- Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect all external devices, turn off the notebook, remove the battery (if applicable), and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Reconnect power and restart the notebook.
- Update BIOS and Drivers: Ensure the BIOS, and graphics drivers are up to date. You can update these from the HP Support website.
- Test with Minimum Configuration: Remove the hard drive to isolate operating system issues and test video in BIOS Setup (press f10 at startup).
Detailed Troubleshooting Steps
- Reseat Display Cable: Open the notebook’s back panel and check the display cable connection on both the system board and the display panel side.
- Examine Major Components: Inspect and reseat major components like the hard drive and memory.
- Perform Display Self-Test:
- Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tool. Restart your computer and press f2 during boot. Select Component Tests, then Video. Conduct a Video Memory Check, Palette Check, and Dead Pixel Check.
Further Steps for Technicians
- Replacement Operations:
- Test with a confirmed working display panel. If this solves the issue, the original display panel may be defective.
- Replace the system board if replacing the display panel doesn’t resolve the issue, as a defective video function on the system board might be the cause.
