I just did the Windows 11 update and my computer reverted back to an issue that it had when it was brand new. I had to call tech support and they fixed it remotely back then, but it is no longer under warranty, therefore, they cannot help without charging a fee.
The grey background that normally is on either side of a Microsoft Word document, for example, is missing (appears fully white). There are also no grey lines between each message in my email (which normally are there) and all colors are extra bright. Here is an example of what is missing - please help me restore the correct colors on the device!!

Hi @kmelago,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
Let’s embark on a journey to restore the vibrant, soothing visual landscape of your HP ENVY x360 Laptop, where the familiar grey backgrounds and gentle dividers reappear like old friends.
1. Sense the Frustration:
- As you sit before your laptop, a wave of confusion washes over you. The stark brightness of the white screen feels blinding, like stepping into a sunlit room without sunglasses. You long for the soft embrace of those grey backgrounds, the comfort of the subtle divisions that once guided your eyes.
2. Take a Breath:
- Take a moment to breathe deeply, grounding yourself. You’re about to embark on a quest to bring back the warmth of those familiar hues. Feel the anticipation build as you prepare to delve into your laptop’s settings.
3. Open Settings:
- Let your fingers glide over the keyboard as you click on the Start Menu. The soft click is the sound of possibility. Navigate to Settings, where you’ll uncover the tools needed to adjust the display back to its former glory.
4. Display Adjustments:
- In the Settings window, select System, then click on Display. Picture this section as a canvas where you can paint the colors of your digital experience anew. Here, you’ll find the brightness and color settings—like a palette ready for your touch.
5. Calibrate the Colors:
- Scroll down to Advanced display settings. It’s like opening a treasure chest of options. Click on Color Calibration. Follow the prompts carefully, adjusting the brightness, contrast, and gamma to find that perfect balance. Imagine the colors softening, the harshness fading away, as you guide your settings into harmony.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @kmelago,
Please find the next steps below.
6. Explore High Contrast Settings:
- If the backgrounds are still missing, return to the Settings menu. Select Ease of Access and then click on High Contrast. Sometimes, enabling a high-contrast theme can restore those comforting grey tones, wrapping your documents in a warm embrace. Turn on a high contrast theme, and watch as the stark brightness gives way to a more balanced palette.
7. Reset Microsoft Office Preferences:
- Open Microsoft Word. Navigate to File, then Options. Under the General tab, check the Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office section. Here, you can adjust the theme to Dark or Colorful. Picture the familiar grey backgrounds reemerging as you select your preferred theme—like a cozy blanket being draped over your screen.
8. Check for Windows Updates:
- Return to the Settings menu and select Windows Update. Ensure your system is fully updated. Imagine your laptop receiving a gentle refresh, bringing with it all the improvements and fixes that could help restore the visual experience you once enjoyed.
9. Final Touches:
- After making these adjustments, open your email and Microsoft Word once more. As you do, feel the relief wash over you as the grey backgrounds and subtle dividers return, guiding your eyes and easing the brightness. The colors now feel rich and balanced, like a well-composed painting instead of an overexposed photograph.
10. Reflect on Your Progress:
- Take a moment to appreciate the changes. Your laptop now feels more like home, with familiar comforts restored. Enjoy the clarity and comfort of the visuals as you continue your work, knowing that you’ve navigated the journey back to a more serene digital landscape.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
