Hi @Dkeys,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • When you say “everything works as normal,” do you mean you can hear Windows sounds or the fan running, but the screen stays grey?
  • Does the grey screen appear immediately after the HP logo, or only once Windows has loaded?
  • Have you tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor to see if video displays there?

Here are some troubleshooting steps worth trying:

  • Hard reset: Disconnect power, hold the power button for 15–20 seconds, then reconnect and try again.
  • External display test: Connect the laptop to a monitor or TV via HDMI. If the external display works, the issue may be with the built‑in panel or its connection.
  • Boot into Safe Mode: Restart and press F11 or hold Shift + Restart → choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Safe Mode. If video works in Safe Mode, it’s likely a driver issue.
  • Update/reinstall graphics drivers: In Device Manager → Display adapters, uninstall the graphics driver, then restart. Windows will reinstall a default driver. Later, update to the latest driver from HP’s support site.
  • BIOS update: Check HP’s support page for your model and install the latest BIOS. Display initialization bugs are sometimes fixed at the firmware level.
  • Reset display settings: If you can access Windows, go to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display settings and reset resolution/refresh rate.

When you connect an external monitor, does it show video correctly, or does it stay grey as well? That detail will help confirm whether this is a panel issue or a graphics driver/software problem.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster!

Take care and have an amazing day ahead!

Best regards,
