ZBook 15u G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings,

I have a Zbook 15u G2 laptop with the following specs

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5500U CPU @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16260MB RAM

I bought it second hand and it seems to be in good condition. The issue for me is that the GPU does not appear on any apps that are meant to make use of the GPU such as OBS for streaming, Da Vinci Resolve, Adobe Premier etc, basically anywhere where you would expect it to show up. I did a fresh install of all the drivers  straight from the hp website:

https://support.hp.com/za-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-zbook-15u-g2-mobile-workstation/7152802

I have tried installing older versions of the softwares because I thought that perhaps that particular GPU was not supported in the newer ones but even they could not detect it. I have run HP Diagnostic Tools and no problems were detected. Now I have run out of solutions, because the GPU is there but i am not making full usage of it. May someone help?

Hello, 15u G2 was the the  'flagship'  1st gen thin ZBook Notebook. I've had one of these as a personal daily (uber daily) for 5yrs. Over 5500 power cycles & soon to nudge 4000hrs power on. Its seen 30 flights both OS and domestically to mining sites and about 50000km outback driving. - Hardware so far is faultless.  I keep a very clean OS (Win10Pro) always latest version drivers & BIOS, & full OS rebuild every year. I know this machine intimately. - I too at first thought, HEY! that AMD GPU is hitching a free ride on the Intel HD5500 GPU!!  - But that’s how 'discrete' graphics configurations work and the default Windows Resource Monitor doesn’t show the intricacies of whats going on inder the hood. If the M4170 is in Device Manger, you use the latest HP Driver, then its 'all good'.  Assuming its not been thrown out a window or that a millennial or a muppet has not been poking around inside, you can trust this machine.... Its doing its job and if you keep a clean OS, it will continue do it very well for 2-4 years to come.  There's docco on discrete graphics on the internet, and even tools that will delineate what each GPU is 'actually' doing. - enjoy the research!
