On a brand new HP Elitebook Laptop, I have issue with pages jumping to a prior page in Browsers, and similarly folders jumping into a prior navigated folder in Windows Explorer.
To recreate:
Open Edge (or Chrome). Go to a webpage (page 1), click to a link and go to another page (page 2), click a link and go to another page (page 3). Now, click the back button or use backspace or alt+< to go back one level (i.e. back to page 2). Wait a few seconds and the browser will jump back to page 3 by itself.
Similarly, open windows explorer, click on c: , click on windows (folder 1), click on Branding (folder 2), click on ShellBrd (folder 3). Hit backspace to go back to Branding (folder 2). Wait a few seconds and windows explorer jumps back to ShellBrd (folder 3) by itself.
I was told by HP Support that this could be a hardware issue so I have gone through two Elitebook 830 G5 and the same issue exists. This was originally discovered on Windows 10 Enterprise image with my IT Dept installed, so we restored back to Windows 10 Pro which ships with this Laptop, and the issue exists there as well.
I demo'ed this to Support and now I am waiting for someone from support to reach out to me - they told me its escalated but I have heard nothing back.
Here is the best part! I After using this laptop for 2 more days, i think the issue is with the Pointing Stick (Nub) - This behavior only happens when you navigate with Pointing Stick. This does not happen when using touchpad. This is the best finding so far!! I am sharing this on the board so someone from HP can read and work towards an updated driver.
Please reach out to me so I can get to use the pointing stick again. I am doing the pilot of Windows 10 for our organization, if this issue persists we will not be refreshing our lineup with Elitebook G5 series.
Thank you.

I escalated this as high as it could go and HP is going to publish an update to the driver soon (I was quoted 15 days).
In the mean time, this is how you can fix it yourself by editing the registry and removing the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SynTP\Parameters\KBCNotifyConfig
Good Luck!

I have same inconvenient. Apparently when I press PointStick it seems that something gesture event happens. Chrome goes to next page and NotePad++ goes to next tab.
I contacted HP's support(Japan), but I was told that there is no specification of such behavior.
However, I uninstalled(and remove) the Synaptics Driver(Synaptics Pointing Device) and using PS/2 Compatible Mouse Driver, then the behavior no longer occurred.
Again, I think there is a unnecessary function or bug in this driver.
I do not use touch pad gestures, so I will use it for a while in this state(not use Synaptics Driver), but I hope HP to fix this issue quickly.

Dear HP Team,
I am experiencing similar challenges with the Poinstick on my brand new HP EliteBook 830 G5.
It happens during browsing the folders on Windows 10: when I open new folder, suddenly the computer goes back to the higher level w/o my interaction. If I enter any folder again - it takes me to higher level again. All the time.
Same is observed while scrolling the settings in Chrome.
This is very annoying.
Then yesterday I also experienced something more on the VLC player.
While a video is running, then even if I touch the Pointstick, video stops.
I tested that and it works (stops) like that all the time.
What could the problem be?
Thank you in advace for help.

The issue is with the drivers for pointing stick/mouse. I have not seen a driver update being pushed out even though I was told it would be coming soon (July 2018).
You can fix this issue yourself by editing and removing the registry key noted in my prior comment.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SynTP\Parameters\KBCNotifyConfig
