I've been experiencing a perplexing issue with my HP Envy 15 (es1000ny) laptop, The main problem is that my laptop screen refuses to turn on.
Here are the details of the issue:
Flickering on Boot: Initially, when booting up, the screen would flicker briefly but then remain completely black. I used to resolve this problem by opening and closing the laptop lid multiple times, sometimes just a few times, and other times it took 15 or more attempts. However, as of yesterday, the screen has stopped displaying anything altogether.
Power cycling works: When I turn the laptop on and off numerous times - sometimes it will start working normally. Without touching the lid or anything. Yet after rebooting - it stops working.
Consistency Across Systems: The issue persists across all states, whether I'm in the BIOS, running Windows, or using Linux. It simply refuses to show any sign of life on the screen.
Odd Behavior: What's even more perplexing is that I noticed that, even when the laptop screen didn't work, I could boot into Windows and set up an external monitor to duplicate the displays. Surprisingly, the touchscreen remained functional, allowing me to move things around on the invisible screen.
Failed Display Cable Troubleshooting: I've attempted to resolve the issue by fiddling with the display cable and reconnecting it to the motherboard, but this hasn't changed anything.

Hi @chris884,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Envy 15 (es1000ny) laptop's screen won't turn on, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.
Check the Power Source:
- Ensure that the laptop is properly connected to a power source or that the battery has sufficient charge. Sometimes, a drained battery can prevent the screen from turning on.
External Display:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV to see if the laptop is still functioning. If you see the display on the external screen, the issue may be with your laptop's built-in display.
Brightness Settings:
- Sometimes, the screen brightness can be set to the lowest level or turned off accidentally. Press the appropriate function key (usually F2 or F3) to increase the brightness or try pressing the Windows key and the "+" key together to increase the brightness.
Try a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source.
- Disconnect any external peripherals (e.g., mouse, keyboard, USB devices).
- Remove the laptop battery, if possible.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and power source.
- Turn on the laptop and check if the screen comes on.
Check for Display Output:
- While the laptop is on (even if the screen is black), try pressing Win+P to cycle through display modes. This might bring back the screen if it's set to an extended display mode.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display problems. You can update the graphics drivers from the HP website or by using the Device Manager in Windows.
Boot in Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 or Shift+F8 during startup. If the screen works in Safe Mode, it could indicate a software or driver issue.
BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Sometimes, BIOS/UEFI settings can affect the display. Try accessing the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing the appropriate key (usually F2 or Del) during startup and check if there are any display-related settings that need adjustment.
Hardware Issues:
- If none of the above steps work, there could be a hardware issue with the laptop's screen, graphics card, or other internal components.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
