HP Envy Touchpad Not Responding

Every once in a while, over the past months, I've opened up my computer to find the cursor missing, and the touchpad not responding. I am able to plug in a USB Mouse to gain cursor control, but the only way to get my touchpad back was to restart my computer once or twice. This usually worked for me, so I wasn't all that concerned about the issue, but a few days ago, it happened again, and I haven't been able to remedy it. I've tried turning the pad off and on again and I've tried updating my drivers, but nothing seems to help. Any tips on how to regain touchpad function?

HP Envy Touchpad Not Responding

Some help would really be appreciated. It's getting worse. 

 

Today, I come back from my lunch break and there is another cursor icon glitching out at the edge of my screen, not controlled by the touchpad or the mouse. The mouse controlled cursor works for a while then starts to freak out as well. It becomes stuck in the area around the "ghost" cursor and I can only move it so far before it jumps back. I restart the computer, the "ghost cursor sticks around until it boots back up, and it's like nothing happened.

@adring2021 Welcome to HP Forums Community!

  1. Perform a hard reset by following the steps in the HP document Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset (in English). A hard reset clears the driver instructions. Your computer rereads all instructions from the drivers and software stored in the Operating System which can solve some problems.
  2. Be sure you have the latest drivers for your Touchpad. Use the following steps to install the latest drivers.
    1. Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads web page. Enter your computer model number and then click Go.
    2. Select your computer model from the list of results.
    3. Select your operating system from the drop-down menu and then click Next.
    4. Scroll down to select the driver category Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices.
    5. Click the Download button next to the appropriate TouchPad or ClickPad driver. The file downloads to your Downloads folder
    6. Open your Downloads folder and double-click to install the latest driver. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  3. Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.

    (If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,

    However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).

     

    Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:

    Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.

  4. 1.   Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
  5. 2.   Click Device Manager.
  6. 3.   Click + sign next to Mouse.
  7. 4.   Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
  8. 5.   Restart your computer.
