HP G5 states compatibility with all HP laptops - but my OMEN17 does not recognize it.

I'm happy with my laptop, but the HP G5 USB-C Dock which states compatibility ("Designed with universal compatibility in mind, this dock works with both HP and non-HP USB-C®- and Thunderbolt™-enabled laptops.[1]") per HP USB-C Dock G5.

Note [1] states: "[1] For USB-C® functionality, host PC must support the DisplayPort™ Alt mode protocol through its USB-C® port. Thunderbolt™-enabled notebooks will function at USB-C® speeds. Charging and port replication is supported on notebooks that have implemented USB-C® industry specifications. Power button to turn on or wake the system, on HP notebooks. HP does not provide Ethernet and audio drivers on Mac PCs."

My laptop specs OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck1000 series specifications | HP® Customer Support states: "(1) USB4™ with Thunderbolt™ Gen 4 Type-C port; 40 Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge)".

Cannot derive more details from this - hence all looked good, so I ordered the HP G5 Essential USB-C Docking station to wire up my two monitors, extern keyboard and mouse.

However, having received the HP G5 I'm unable to get anything on the monitors - and in addition the laptop does not charge.

I cannot derive a conclusion from the lack of details in your spec sheets, which leaves me to trial and error.

I will need you to confirm this is not compatible - so I can return my HP G5 and replace by one which is compatible.

Please advise ASAP!

I tested the HP USB-C G5 dock with my HP Omen 15-dc0071TX which uses 200W charger. I know for sure the dock won't be able to charge my machine because wattage from the dock is too weak.

For external monitors I don't have 4K monitor to test, I only have 5 FHD monitors therefore I could get 3 FHD external displays. Did you check the compatible list before buying the dock ? The compatible list:

I'm using my HP USB-C G5 dock with my HP EliteBook 840 G5 now and very happy with the out come. I can use SINGLE cable setup.

In short: The HP USB-C G5 dock is NOT compatible with your Omen machine.(see above list).

I was plan to test the HP Thunderbolt™ Dock 230W G2 with my Omen but I'm going to buy a new machine soon and I'm very happy to use my HP Omen with a cheap dock I bought on eBay for A$70, I've got all i want only the dock can't charge my Omen

Did a bit more research as well and found the compatibility list as well. Interesting how HP marketing states: "this dock works with both HP and non-HP USB-C®- and Thunderbolt™-enabled laptops" and then hidden behind link in a different area on the spec pages provides a compatibility list where HP OMEN 17 (which is a Thunderbolt 4 capable laptop) is not listed). False advertisement IMHO.

Filed a return with HP support for incompatibility and return in progress.

On the hunt for a compatible Thunderbolt 4 docking station capable of charging/maintaining battery (do not need the fast charging as the 330W charger supports). Still trying to figure out what the wattage should be and HP is not very helpful in providing this kind of data. The 330W charger seems a bit over dimensioned for non-gaming scenarios where I will use my laptop with the dock.

FYI.

I also did 2 more tests on my

• HP Envy 15-ee0047nr which has 1 USB-C 10Gbps with PD and DP 1.4
• and Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 13-7000 series with Thunderbolt™ 3 port.

Both had same result but I did not get truly single cable setup on both. The dock works perfectly with Ellitebook 840 G5.

Single cable: turn on the dock also turn on machine and shutdown machine also shutdown the dock.
