Microsoft Windows 11

I have looked for an answer here in this forum, and see discussion around this topic from about 2 years ago, but no real clear answer.

I have an HP laptop model 15-dy5073dx which I purchased about 4 months ago.

I have Windows 11 and I have the Power settings set to never go to sleep when plugged in.

Despite those settings, after a few hours, the laptop goes black, and nothing I do will wake the screen back up!

  • Ctrl-Al-Del
  • space bar
  • brief press of the power button
  • Esc key
  • nada

The only way I can get back to functioning is to long-press on the power button until I have forced the device to literally shut down, then power it back up.  I HATE doing that, for many reasons, but I have no choice.

Any suggestions?  This behavior is infuriating!  Thanks!

Hi @Multimatt,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is encountering a sleep issue that’s preventing it from waking up properly. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this problem.

Update Your Drivers

  • Graphics Drivers: Go to the HP Support website or use Windows Update to check for and install any updates for your graphics drivers.
  • Chipset Drivers: Similarly, update your chipset drivers from the HP Support site or Windows Update.

Check Power Settings

Make sure your power settings are correctly configured:

  • Open Power & Sleep Settings: Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  • Additional Power Settings: Click on Additional power settings on the right side.
  • Change Plan Settings: Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  • Change Advanced Power Settings: Click on Change advanced power settings.
  • Sleep Settings: Make sure Sleep is set to Never when plugged in.

Check for Windows Updates

Ensure your system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click Check for updates and install any available updates.

BIOS Update

An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause power issues:

  • Check for BIOS Updates: Visit the HP Support website and check if there’s a BIOS update available for your laptop model. Follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

Power Settings in BIOS

Sometimes, power management settings in the BIOS/UEFI can affect sleep behavior:

  • Enter BIOS/UEFI: Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, or Esc during startup).
  • Check Power Settings: Look for any power management or sleep settings and make sure they are configured correctly.

Device Manager Settings

Disable the ability of devices to wake the computer:

  • Open Device Manager: Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Network Adapters: Expand Network adapters, right-click on your network adapter, and select Properties.
  • Power Management Tab: Uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer and click OK.

Check for System Errors

Run a system file check to fix any corrupted files:

  • Open Command Prompt as Admin: Search for Command Prompt, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator.
  • Run SFC: Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete and follow any instructions.

Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can sometimes cause issues with waking from sleep:

  • Go to Power Settings: Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  • Choose What the Power Buttons Do: Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Change Settings: Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Turn Off Fast Startup: Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
