HP Notebook 15-dy1074nr
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a laptop: HP Notebook 15-dy1074nr

OS Name Microsoft Windows 11 Home

Version 10.0.22631 Build 22631

System Name LAPTOP-5FCMOFD1

System Manufacturer HP

System Type x64-based PC

System SKU 8LY26UA#ABA

BIOS Version/Date AMI F.30, 7/4/2023

My screen is flickering, however when I connect an external monitor the flickering doesn't happen on the external monitor. I have to also say that I upgraded to Windows 10, initially this problem was not happening, but after sometime it came. Is there a solution to this problem?

Hi @PeterPaliwoda,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

The screen flickering issue on your HP Notebook 15-dy1074nr, especially when it doesn't occur on an external monitor, suggests that the problem may be related to your laptop's display settings, drivers, or hardware. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause screen flickering. Follow these steps to update them:

Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
  • Expand the "Display adapters" section.
  • Right-click on your graphics card and select "Update driver."
  • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."

Manufacturer's Website:

  • Visit the HP support website or the website of your graphics card manufacturer (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD).
  • Download and install the latest drivers for your graphics card.

2. Adjust Display Settings

Incorrect display settings can cause flickering.

Refresh Rate:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
  • Scroll down and click on "Advanced display settings."
  • Ensure that the refresh rate is set to the recommended setting.

Graphics Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Graphics Properties" or "NVIDIA Control Panel" (depending on your GPU).
  • Adjust settings to see if they resolve the flickering issue.

3. Check for Windows Updates

Ensure that your system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates:

  1. Settings:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Click on "Check for updates" and install any available updates.

4. Roll Back Graphics Driver

If the issue started after a driver update, rolling back to a previous version might help:

  1. Device Manager:
    • Open Device Manager and expand the "Display adapters" section.
    • Right-click on your graphics card and select "Properties."
    • Go to the "Driver" tab and click on "Roll Back Driver" if the option is available.

Kindly check the next steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @PeterPaliwoda,

Please find the next steps below.

5. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Sometimes, hardware acceleration in applications can cause flickering.

  1. Browser:
    • Open your web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox).
    • Go to Settings > Advanced Settings > System.
    • Disable "Use hardware acceleration when available."
  2. Other Applications:
    • Check the settings of other applications that might be using hardware acceleration and disable it.

6. BIOS Update

Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues:

  1. HP Support:
    • Visit the HP support website.
    • Search for your model and download the latest BIOS update.
    • Follow the instructions provided to update your BIOS.

7. Check for Loose Connections

If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check for any loose connections between the display and the motherboard:

  1. Power Off:
    • Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from power.
  2. Open the Laptop:
    • Carefully open the laptop following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Check the cable connections to the display and ensure they are secure.

8. Perform a Clean Boot

A clean boot can help identify if a background program is causing the issue:

  1. System Configuration:
    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    • Go to the "Services" tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," and click "Disable all."
    • Go to the "Startup" tab and click "Open Task Manager."
    • Disable all startup items.
  2. Restart:
    • Restart your computer to see if the flickering persists.

If none of these solutions work, it might be a hardware issue with the laptop's display. In that case, contact HP phone support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
