HP Notebook 17-by0053od wont shut correctly

My  HP Notebook--17-by0053od no longer shuts properly on the right side.  A gap is present.  It has not been dropped or mishandled.  It is less than 4 years old. I suspect it is the same hinge problem that seems to be somewhat common with HPs.  Has anyone found a reasonable way to fix this? 

I was quoted $300 if it is the bottom part (mount) and more if the hinge is broken.  I can buy a new laptop for just a little more.  Although the computer has worked well otherwise, the cheap shell is going to lead me to other brands. Sad.

Go to a computer store where you can look at and test the notebooks. Get advice there. Do not buy the most expensive and not the cheapest. Take your time and follow your gut feeling.
