Recently, the screen on my laptop has been a flickering black screen most of the times I turn it on. Sometimes the pc will display perfectly fine, other times I can see the backlight blinking rapidly without any picture on the screen.

When it turns on without the screen working, I've discovered that opening the PC and unclasping then re-clasping the latch on the ribbon cable to the display will usually fix the issue. I'm thinking that this may just be a bad contact from the ribbon cable, but I'm worried that the ribbon cable socket on the motherboard is the real issue here. Any thoughts on this problem?

@Ben_L1,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

This looks like a possible hardware failure. However, I would suggest you try these steps here:

Have you tried checking with an external monitor does the issue persist?

Does the issue persist on the BIOS page?

If the issue persists on the BIOS page it is a hardware issue with the display.

If the issue does not persist on the BIOS page try updating the graphics, chipset and BIOS on the PC to the latest version.

Uninstall the graphics driver from device manager and install the latest version of BIOS,chipset and graphics drivers on the PC using the HP support assistant.

Hi there Jeet,

What do you mean by hardware failure? The three points of the system I described are all hardware (panel, cable, socket).

-An external monitor works completely fine, and has been my go-to solution for this problem when portability isn't a requirement for my laptop (which is rare).

-The issue persists before any sort of OS booting operation, which is why I suspect it's some sort of connection issue. What's weird about that is when I unlatch and re-latch the ribbon cable on the motherboard to when the display starts working again, it doesn't stop working until the display is turned off (sleep, restart, etc) even if I tug or jiggle the cable lightly.

-I have updated graphics drivers etc, that was my first action when the issue appeared.

-I'll give the bios and fresh drivers a swing and report back here.
