HP Pavillion x360 Convertible model: 14-ba104na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have this laptop

https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Pavilion-14-ba104na-14-Inch-Convertible/dp/B07954639

And the video shows it working with an HP stylus pen.

I happen to have an HP Active Pen G2 (RMN-HSM-W001P) for work.

The pen pairs with the laptop no problem.

The buttons work, i.e. single-click/double-click and apps open.

But the pen tip does not draw or select items on the screen even if I physically touch the screen.

Fingers and multi-touch work fine.

(I also have a wacom tablet pen and this doesnt work either.)

Do I need a specific pen to work with this laptop?

Does it need some sort of capacitive tip and the HP Active Pen G2 does not have this?

Would be really helpful if HP had a tool you could enter your model and it could list all compatible HP products for my laptop including SSD's, memory, pens, etc. Does such a thing exist?

At this writing, I am not aware of a tool that finds the information for you.

There is a document that provides the type of information you seek.

If this is your computer:

HP Pavilion x360 - 14-ba104na

Active Stylus - Compatibility Document

Search the document for a compatible stylus:

HP PCs - Touchscreen Compatibility with Pen and Stylus

Supported Pen Options:

Model name
HP Pen (Microsoft)

1MR94AA

SPS: 920241-001 (Dark Ash Silver) / 910942-001 (Natural Silver)
HP x360 11 EMR Pen with Eraser (Wacom)

2EB40AA

SPS: 928519-001
HP Tilt Pen (Microsoft)

2MY21AA

HP SPS: 929863-001 (Dark Ash Silver) / 929863-002 (Natural Silver)

HP Pavilion x360 14m-ba0xx, 14-ba0xx

* Computers that support the HP Pen can also support the HP Tilt Pen, but may not offer all the features.

Details

  • If there is an HP Active Stylus available for your model, it should be included in the document.
  • If you are unsure of the model series, click open the appropriate category (Consumer or Business class systems), peruse the list to find supported models.
  • Pen(s) compatible with your computer are marked with a “checkmark” to the right of your computer model, in the column(s) under the Pen name / description(s).
  • Additional information can sometimes be found in Advisory Documents for your computer.
  • The document is updated as new information becomes available.

How to Search the Compatibility Document

  • Open the document in your browser
  • Click open both (all) categories (business and consumer) to expand the lists
  • Examine the lists to find a match to your computer model
  • Product Name contain an “m”? Consider this to be the same as the model with no “m”.
    • Example: HP Envy x360 15m-bp011dx is the same (and uses the same stylus) as HP Envy x360 15-bp011dx
  • Use CTRL-F to open the website search bar – type in the model type of your computer, leaving off the “HP” prefix and stopping just before OR just after the “dash” in the name. “Less is better”.
    • Example: Spectre x360 15-   or   Spectre x360  or  even just Envy x360 (no size designator)
  • If a match is found, examine the results to determine if there is a pen for your model group
    • Example: At this writing, matches for Spectre x360 15 include model groups: Spectre x360 15-ap0xx, Spectre x360 15-bl0xx
  • What about the “X*” notation in the Tilt Pen column? The pen is compatible.  Models marked with the asterisk have not been tested and may – or may not - provide full functionality.
  • What about “xx0xx” as compared to “xx1xx”? Frequently these are both the “same” (both support the same pen).
    • Example: Envy x360 15-bq0xx is the same as Envy x360 15-bq1xx
    • If you are not sure, ask. (Know that response times vary widely – our community does not have access to the information and we, too, must ask to receive additional information.)

@Dragon-Fur thankyou for your response and your clarrification on Details and How to search. This is information HP could put up on the Compatibility page especially the part about alternative model numbers.

I found it odd that my Pavillion allowed me to pair with the G2 pen, and configure the pen and buttons, but not energise the stylus tip. I am guessing it probably doesnt do this until it has established the receiving laptop as compatible. And if this is the case then there is an obvious opotunity for HP to tell the user their pen is not compatible and suggest an alternative i.e. the 1MR94AA.

I do appreciate though that all pens (especially Active Pens) are not compatible with all laptops and I have now ordered a 1MR94AA. Once I receive this, I will confirm it works and mark this as the accepted solution.

Thank you again.
