HI Everyone,

I'm having an issue with HP Probook 440 G8 after deploying a windows image.

Environtment

  • Laptop Model: HP Probook 440 G8
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 22H2
  • BIOS Ver: T87 Ver. 01.24.03

Problem

After Imaging, the touchpad doesn't work.

In Device Manager:

  • Human Interface Device -> I2C HID Device
  • Status: Code 10 - This device cannot start
  • Hardware ID: ACPI\VEN_ELAN&DEV_0733
  • Matching Device ID: ACPI\PNP0C50
  • INF Name: hidi2c. inf

The intel Serial IO driver appears to be installed correctly:

  • Provider: Intel Corporation
  • Version: 30.100.2129.8

What make this strange

This is the only laptop with this issue.

I deployed the exact same image to multiple HP Probook 440 G8 laptops, and all the other work normally. Usually, after Windows update installs the required drivers, the touchpad starts working.

However, on this one device:

  • Touchpad never works
  • I2C HID Device stays at code 10
  • Windows update is unable to install the required updates/driver (it also shows that the windows version has reached end of support even though the installation is Windows 10 22H2)

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Re-imaged the laptop
  • Installed Intel Serial IO driver manually
  • Downloaded and installed drivers from HP Support
  • Ran sfc /scannow
  • Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Checked Device Manager (no unknown Devices)
  • BIOS is updated (T87 Ver. 01.24.03)

Unfortunately, none of these resolved the issue.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with an HP Probook 440 G8 where I2C HID Device (ELAN) shows code 10 ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Hi  @marshhh26

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how frustrating it can be when a touchpad remains non-functional after imaging, especially when the same image works correctly on other HP ProBook 440 G8 systems.

Based on the steps you've already performed, including re-imaging, manually installing the Intel Serial IO and HP drivers, running SFC and DISM repairs, and updating the BIOS, you've already covered the most common software-related troubleshooting. Since this appears to be isolated to a single device while identical models are functioning normally with the same image, the issue may require more in-depth hardware and platform-level diagnostics.

Given the behaviour of this particular unit, along with the persistent I2C HID Device (Code 10) error and Windows Update irregularities you've described, I recommend contacting HP Phone Support for advanced troubleshooting and hardware diagnostics.  This may necessitate a one-on-one conversation to resolve the issue via remote assistance.

We recommend taking the conversation to our phone support team. They'll work with you one-on-one to get the issue sorted, possibly with some remote assistance magic.
