HP Spectre x360 13.5 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-ef0000 (3Y838AV)

My HP Spectre X360 has 2 connected issues- when fully folded into tablet mode, the screen immediately goes to sleep and can only be woken by unfolding the laptop, and equally, when the lid is shut, it does not go to sleep and instead remains on until it turns off due to idleness. I've had this issue once before, but unfortunately support's instructions caused the laptop to brick itself before finding the problem. Is there any way to fix this without a repair? It's almost like the laptop has got the direction that the lid shuts in confused.

Hi @abdbevins,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Spectre X360 laptop goes to sleep automatically when you switch it to tablet mode, there could be a few possible reasons and solutions to resolve the issue. Here are some steps you can try.

Update your operating system and drivers: Ensure that your laptop has the latest updates installed, including Windows updates and HP driver updates. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause compatibility issues with different modes.

Adjust power settings: Check your power settings to ensure that your laptop is not set to sleep when switched to tablet mode. To do this, follow these steps.

  • Open the Start menu and search for "Power & sleep settings."
  • Click on "Power & sleep settings" to open the settings page.
  • Under the "Sleep" section, ensure that "When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network" is set to "Never."
  • Scroll down to the "Related settings" section and click on "Additional power settings."
  • In the Power Options window, click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan.
  • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
  • Look for an option called "Power buttons and lid" or something similar.
  • Expand the option and find the "Lid close action" setting.
  • Set it to "Do nothing" for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."
  • Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

Update the BIOS: Visit the official HP support website and check if there are any BIOS updates available for your HP Spectre X360 model. Installing the latest BIOS can sometimes resolve power-related issues.

Perform a system restart or reset: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix temporary glitches. If the problem persists, you can try performing a system reset to restore your laptop to its default settings. Remember to back up your important files before proceeding with a reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
