Hi, I'm posting a question here because I have tried everything I could find online and nothing works.
Problem: my HP spectre x360 2023 model, has a problem where the touch screen would not respond to any touch input or pen input until I either: restart the computer or go into device manager and disable and enable a specific HID device. Or at least, that used to be the case but recently restarting and disabling the HID device doesnt work and now I need to shut down and the boot up the device.

Additional problem context: whenever this happens, a specific I2C HID device throws a error which reads:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware.

Please contact the system manufacturer for further assistance"

The device location is given as: on Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - 51E9

Usually I needed to disable and then enable this device and then it would work perfectly again until the next time the device goes into sleep mode. After it was in sleep mode it work stop working.

My attempts: I have tried everything from restarting, disabling and enabling the faulty HID device, uninstalling the device and then restarting, updated any drivers I could find that are related to the device, updated firmware, updated the BIOS. I have even tried the recovery feature where you can reinstall windows without losing data or apps. Nothing seems to permanently resolve the issue.

Context of device: The device is a 2023 model which I purchased at the end of 2023 and started using daily from start of 2024. I use the touchscreen almost daily for note taking and I have never physically damaged any of the hardware.

Now I ask with tearful eyes.....what do I do now???

Hi @ajrcr

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP Spectre x360 (2023 model) touchscreen is not responding. You’ve already tried several steps, including restarting the device, disabling and re‑enabling the HID‑compliant touch device, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, updating related drivers, updating the firmware, and updating the BIOS. here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Verify Touchscreen Capability

Confirm that your laptop actually has touch input enabled.

Search Windows for View pen and touch

  • If it says No pen or touch input available, your screen may not be touch-enabled

  • If touch input is listed, proceed to the next step

Enable Touch Screen

The touchscreen may be disabled in Device Manager.

Right-click Start → Device Manager → Human Interface Devices

  • Locate HID-compliant touch screen

  • Right-click and select Enable if available

Update or Reinstall Driver

Corrupted drivers often cause touch issues.

In Device Manager → HID-compliant touch screen

  • Right-click and select Uninstall device

  • Restart your PC to reinstall automatically

Calibrate the Touch Screen

Calibration ensures accurate touch response.

Search Windows for Calibrate the screen for pen and touch input

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete calibration

Check Night Light Settings

Night Light can sometimes affect display colors but not touch.

Go to Settings → System → Display → Night Light

  • Ensure Night Light is turned off if colors look abnormal

Run HP Diagnostics

HP’s built-in diagnostics can confirm hardware issues.

Restart → Press ESC → F2 → HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Select Touch Screen Test and follow instructions

Adjust Power Settings

Windows may disable the touchscreen to save power.

Device Manager → HID-compliant touch screen → Properties → Power Management

  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Perform a Hard Reset

Resets hardware connections and clears temporary glitches.

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect external devices

  • If removable, take out the battery

  • Hold power button for 30 seconds

  • Reconnect battery and power on

Update Graphics Driver

Graphics drivers can affect touchscreen responsiveness.

Device Manager → Display Adapters

Take care and have an amazing day!
