HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-aa0000 (7M3L5AV)

I am a student who uses my HP Spectre to take notes in class and complete homework sets. Whenever I am using one note to take notes with the stylus my computer starts to get really warm and only like 30 minutes in the program will completely crash and I have to reopen the app. A number of other things with this computer have caused me problems like sometimes the keyboard stops working and I can only use it as a touchscreen or it will completely freeze for a bit. I don't understand why my laptop has been struggling this much as I only got it in September. I have been unable to try and get it fixed yet as I need it pretty much everyday for school and I just finished exams but unfortunately my warranty ends and because HP doesn't provide phone support on the weekends I won't be able to get warranty coverage. I'm hoping for any suggestions that will help and prevent me from having to spend boatloads of money to fix this computer that is pretty new.

Hi @af1122

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I appreciate the effort you've put into troubleshooting this, and I’m sorry for the frustration—your laptop should be performing reliably, especially since it’s still relatively new.

Since OneNote crashes when using the stylus, and you’re also experiencing keyboard failures, freezing, and overheating, here are some steps that might help:

1. Update Graphics & Touchscreen Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Display Adapters and Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click Intel/NVIDIA Graphics and Touchscreen Driver, then select Update driver.

2. Adjust OneNote Performance Settings

  • Open OneNoteSettingsOptions.
  • Disable Auto Sync and Background Image Processing.
  • Lower Pen Input Sensitivity if available.

3. Check for Overheating Issues

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  • Check if CPU or GPU usage spikes when using OneNote.
  • If overheating persists, consider cleaning the vents or using a cooling pad.

4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Press F2 repeatedly while turning it on to enter HP Diagnostics.
  • Run tests for Battery, Keyboard, and Touchscreen.

If the issue persists, you may need to reset Windows, reinstall OneNote, or check for BIOS updates.
