I was working on my laptop this evening when the screen went black. There were no flashes or warnings, just black. I put the computer to sleep and did a hard reset. The screen is still black. I borrowed an external monitor. The laptop display is black, but the computer is running fine and displaying correctly on the external monitor. In Display settings, only the external monitor is detected, not my laptop screen.

Only the screen is not working. Face ID to unlock my laptop, the keyboard, the sound, even the touchscreen work...just not the laptop display.  I've put my computer to sleep, reset it, and used the Intel support software to install the latest display driver. My screen is still black. I'm not sure what happened or how to fix this. I am also out of warranty. Thank you for your help.

Hi @Symphony08,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15 might have a hardware issue with the display itself or a related component. Since the external monitor works fine, we can rule out the graphics card and drivers as the cause. Here are some steps you can take to further troubleshoot.

Check Display Brightness:

  • It might be worth checking if the brightness level is set too low. Use the function keys to increase brightness.

Reconnect Internal Display Cable:

  • Sometimes, the internal display cable might become loose. If you’re comfortable with it, you can open the laptop and check if the display cable is securely connected to the motherboard.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all external devices and power off the laptop.
  • Hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
  • Power it back on and see if the screen turns on.

Test the Display Using BIOS/UEFI:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing F2, F10, or ESC during startup).
  • Check if the screen displays anything in the BIOS/UEFI menu. If it does, it might be a Windows-related issue rather than a hardware problem.

Inspect for Physical Damage:

  • Check if there is any visible damage to the screen or the laptop’s hinges. Physical damage could affect the screen’s functionality.

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the display works there. This can help determine if a driver or software issue is causing the problem.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If you recently made changes to your system, performing a system restore to a previous point when the display was working might help.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
