My laptop built in display is black and does not appear to be on. Attaching an external display works fine, but the built in display does not appear in display settings. The touchscreen is working. I have tried updating display drivers but it did not solve the issue. The display went black in the middle of working on the computer with no flickering.

Hi @colin0321,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Spectre x360 built-in display is black and not being detected, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue. Follow these steps.
Restart your laptop: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve display-related issues. Turn off your laptop, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
Check display settings:
- Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
- Look for multiple displays and ensure that the built-in display is recognized. If it's not, you may need to detect it or try other options in the display settings.
Function key for display toggle:
- Some laptops have a function key (e.g., F4, F5, etc.) with a monitor icon that can be used to toggle between different display modes. Press the appropriate key combination to switch between display modes and see if the built-in display turns on.
Update graphics drivers:
- Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the official HP website or use the Device Manager to update the graphics driver. If updating doesn't help, you might also try rolling back the driver to a previous version.
Check for Windows updates:
- Make sure your operating system is up to date. Check for and install any pending Windows updates that might include driver updates.
BIOS/UEFI update:
- Visit the HP support website to check for a BIOS/UEFI update for your laptop. Sometimes, firmware updates can address hardware-related issues.
Hardware check:
- If the problem persists, there may be a hardware issue. Connect your laptop to an external monitor and check if the external display works properly. If it does, the problem might be with the laptop's built-in display.
Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager, locate the display adapters, and uninstall the graphics driver. Then, restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver, and this process may resolve any conflicts.
System Restore:
- If the issue started recently, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a point before the problem occurred.
Remember to back up your important data before attempting any major changes to your system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
