My HP Spectre x360 camera only shows black screen. My current system is Windows 11 Home 25H2.

I believed the issue started when I updated the Windows 11 on March 2025.

I have tried the following through Windows Settings and Device Manager:

1. Windows update

2. Reset the Camera App

3. Un-install/re-install the Camera App

4. Update the camera driver

5. Re-start the laptop in each action tried

Hi @JIMELIE,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m sorry you're experiencing this. It’s tough when a trusted work companion like your Spectre’s camera goes dark. Let’s work together to bring back that familiar view:

Common Causes for a Black Webcam on HP Spectre x360

  • Privacy Shutter or Switch: Many Spectre models include a physical shutter or keyboard privacy key that can block the lens, even accidentally.
  • Disabled in BIOS/UEFI: The camera can be disabled at the firmware level, especially after system updates.
  • Driver or Firmware Conflicts: A Windows update may have disrupted the HP True Vision (IR) or standard webcam drivers, even though Device Manager shows them as present.
  • Privacy Settings: In some cases, apps like Zoom or Camera aren’t granted permission to use the webcam.

Step-by-Step Fix with Heartfelt Support

1. Check the Physical Shutter

  • Confirm the privacy shutter or F‑key (often F6/F10) is open. The green camera indicator should light up when unblocked.

2. Confirm Camera Access in Windows

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and ensure:
    • “Camera access for this device” is On,
    • Camera apps (like the Windows Camera, Zoom, etc.) are also allowed.

3. Make Sure It's Enabled in BIOS/UEFI

  1. Restart your laptop and press Esc, then F10 during startup to enter BIOS.
  2. Navigate to System ConfigurationBuilt-in Device Options.
  3. Ensure both HP True Vision and Embedded Camera are Enabled.
  4. Save and exit BIOS.

4. Reinstall & Update Camera Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager → expand Cameras/Imaging Devices.
  2. Right-click on HP True Vision (and any other camera entries), choose Uninstall device, and include driver deletion if prompted.
  3. Restart your laptop, and Windows will reinstall the drivers.
  4. Optional: Visit Official HP® Support to download the latest Firmware and BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
