HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

If the laptop is left unused for some time, the screen goes black as it should but does not always go to sleep mode.  Regardless of the sleep or running (with fan noise) mode, the screen won't come on until restart the machine pressing the power button.  This behavior is intermittent, maybe once in 1-2 days but happens very frequently some days.

I applied all updates from HP, Intel, Nvidia, and Windows.

I tried the methods suggested in HP site for resetting by pressing the power button for 15 secs couple of times, it did not work.  I connected to an external display but nothing came up.  Unfortunately, this is one of those laptops that I cannot take out the battery.

It seems like a common issue with HP laptops.  I would appreciate any help t resolve this issue as it causes issues with respect to losing my unsaved work.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

I already have the HP support app in my system installed.  I have always kept my laptop updated with all HP and Windows updates.  It has all the latest updates software and driver updates from Microsoft and HP.  It's still an issue.  As I said before, it does not happen for a couple of days and then may happen several times a day.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. As you've performed all the relevant troubleshooting steps and the issue persist.

I would suggest performing system factory default will isolate the failure, If its a hardware related issue then computer needs to serviced.

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file inorder to install Windows operating system. Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06162205 to Use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)

Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04758961#AbT3 to perform a System Recovery (Windows 10)
