HP Thunderbolt Dock G2
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

Since Patchday 08-2023, there is following issue in combination with HP EliteBook 855 G8 and HP Thunderbolt Dock G2:

- unplug Notebook from HP Thunderbolt Dock G2

- start up Notebook without HP Thunderbolt Dock G2, e.g. work from home

- plug Notebook to HP Thunderbolt Dock G2

- start Notebook

Result: no external TFT via DisplayPort anymore, the HP DisplayPort Hub on the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 shows installed version 0.0.0.0.

Temporary workaround: install HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 Firmware again and don't unplug the Notebook.

If you unplug / start / shutdown / plug again, the same error occors again.

Happens now with my customers on a daily base.

Ticket open since 14th August 2023, because then it was the 2nd case, now I have 5.

Your computer does NOT have Thunderbolt port, its specs

           https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c07120412#AbT8

Its USB-C ports are USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C 10 Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4). Again they are not Thunderbolt™ 3 nor Thunderbolt™ 4 ports. Therefore your dock is NOT compatible with your machine.

Have you tried HP USB-C G5 dock ?

Regards.

Hello Banhien,

Your information is half correct.

Yes, the AMD has an USB-C and not a factual Thunerbolt Port (wich both have physically the same USB-C connector), but this Dockingstation ist listed as a compatible dockingstation on the QuickSpecs sheet of HP:

https://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c07003386.pdf

See page 48, it states "Options and Accessories (sold separately and availability may vary by country)":

HP USB-C Mini Dock
HP USB-C Travel Dock G2
HP Thunderbolt 120W Dock G2
HP Thunderbolt 120W Dock w/Audio G2
HP Thunderbolt 230W Dock w/Combo Cable G2
HP USB-C 120W G5 Dock
HP USB-C/A 120W Universal Dock G2
HP USB-C Travel Dock

And as the HP Support is aware of this issue, we have to try now another workaround with resetting the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2:

- shut down Notebook

- unplug all cables from the back of the Dockingstation, stay connected with the Notebook

- press and hold the Power-Button on the Notebook for at least 20 seconds

- release Power button

- connect all cables back to the Dockingstation

- try again

As the customer has not yet open, I cannot verify this if it works.
