I tried using PowerPoint recording and it does not allow me to turn on the camera and it says "your media recording device HP TrueVision HD Camera is not set up correctly or is already in use by other apps. Please select another one or close all of the apps that are using it"
I tried restarting the pc, disabling and enabling the camera but it seems like nothing is working since I cannot access the camera on powerpoint even now. And I am worried since I will be writing an exam with moodle proctoring tool so will my camera also be affected there? Please help me fix this

Hi @Lali06
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for reaching out. I understand that your HP TrueVision HD Camera works at the system level but cannot be accessed from PowerPoint Recording, and you're understandably concerned about whether this may also affect your upcoming Moodle proctored exam. It's good to see that you've already restarted the PC and disabled/re-enabled the camera.
Based on the behavior you're seeing, PowerPoint is reporting that the camera is either being used by another application or is not being initialized correctly within Windows. Let's work through a few checks.
Step 1: Confirm the Camera Works Outside PowerPoint
- Close PowerPoint completely.
- Open the Camera app in Windows.
- Verify whether the HP TrueVision HD Camera displays video normally.
If the Camera app works properly, the HP camera hardware and driver are generally functioning, and the issue is likely limited to application access.
Step 2: Check Camera Privacy Settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
- Ensure Camera access is turned On.
- Ensure Let apps access your camera is turned On.
- Scroll down and verify that desktop applications are allowed to access the camera.
After making any changes, restart PowerPoint and test again.
Step 3: Close Applications Using the Camera
The camera can only be actively controlled by certain applications at one time.
Before opening PowerPoint, completely close applications such as:
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
- Google Chrome tabs using camera access
- Microsoft Edge tabs using camera access
- Discord
- OBS Studio
- Streaming or recording software
Then reopen PowerPoint and test the recording feature.
Step 4: Update the HP TrueVision Camera Driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras.
- Right-click HP TrueVision HD Camera.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If an updated driver is installed, restart the PC and test again.
Step 5: Reinstall the Camera Device
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras.
- Right-click HP TrueVision HD Camera.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart the computer.
Windows should automatically reinstall the camera during startup.
Step 6: Check PowerPoint Camera Selection
- Open PowerPoint.
- Start a recording session.
- Look for the camera selection dropdown.
- Verify that HP TrueVision HD Camera is selected and not another disabled or virtual camera.
Regarding Your Moodle Proctored Exam
If the camera functions normally in the Windows Camera app, there is a good possibility that the camera hardware and driver are working correctly. Moodle proctoring tools typically access the camera independently of PowerPoint. However, it is a good idea to perform the camera check within the exam environment or any available system test before the exam date to confirm that camera permissions are available to the proctoring tool.
If the camera does not work in the Windows Camera app either, that would indicate a broader Windows or driver-related issue that should be addressed before the exam.
Please let us know:
- Does the HP TrueVision HD Camera work in the Windows Camera app?
- What is your HP model number or product name?
That information will help us provide more focused guidance.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
