Hello,
I recently purchased the HP USB-C dock G5. While using the dock, I noticed that it charges my HP Pavilion 16 Plus with Thunderbolt connection, very slowly at a rate of 7 hours to fully charge the laptop. Also charging my phone through the USB-C port at the front takes multiple hours. Therefore, my question is how much power (in Watts) I may expect the dock G5 to deliver to my laptop and other connected devices. Using the original adapter, it takes my laptop to fully charge in less than 2 hours at a rate of 135 Watts.
Interestingly, when I received the package it had tape around the openings. Seemingly the package had been opened before. This makes me doubt if the dock I received really is new and hasn't had issues before.
I look forward to your reaction.
Best regards,
Robin

Hi @Robin1207,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP USB-C Dock G5 is designed to deliver power to connected devices, but its charging capability may vary based on the device and connection type. Here are some details regarding the power delivery you can expect from the dock.
Power Delivery Specifications:
Maximum Power Output:
- The HP USB-C Dock G5 can provide up to 100 watts of power delivery to a connected laptop via its USB-C connection. However, this is significantly lower than the 135 watts your HP Pavilion 16 Plus requires for optimal charging.
Charging Rate:
- Because your laptop requires more power than the dock can deliver, it will charge very slowly (around 7 hours, as you mentioned) when connected to the dock. The charging rate will also be impacted by how much power your laptop consumes during use.
USB Ports Charging:
- For charging devices like your phone through the dock’s USB-C ports, the power delivery is typically lower (around 15 watts or less), which can also contribute to longer charging times.
Concerns About the Dock:
- Opened Package: The tape around the openings of the package may indicate that it was opened before. If you suspect that the dock is not functioning properly or may be used, consider the following steps:
- Inspect for Damage: Check for any visible signs of wear, damage, or malfunction.
- Test with Another Device: If possible, test the dock with another Thunderbolt or USB-C device to see if it charges them at expected rates.
- Check Firmware: Ensure that the dock's firmware is up to date, as updates can improve performance and compatibility.
Recommendations:
- Direct Charging: To achieve faster charging times, consider connecting your laptop directly to its original charger when possible.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
