My HP Victus 16 with Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX3050 has problems with using Linux. External displays works well but integrated monitor sometimes blacks out and not works. I have 2 other monitor these uses HDMI and USB-C ports to link and they have no issue at all. Only internal monitor (laptop screen) has black screen issues.
I know Linux is not supported with HP but drivers works well and i don't know whats the problem with the internal monitor.

Hi @erenalyoruk
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're facing with your HP Victus 16 laptop, where the integrated monitor intermittently blacks out while external monitors (HDMI and USB-C) work fine, could be related to several factors, including driver issues, power management, kernel settings, or graphics configuration in Linux. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to help diagnose and resolve the problem:
1. Check for GPU Driver Issues
Your laptop has both an integrated GPU (likely using AMD Radeon graphics as part of the Ryzen 7 7840HS CPU) and a discrete GPU (NVIDIA RTX 3050). Linux can sometimes have difficulty properly switching between these two GPUs, especially when using hybrid graphics (which is common with laptops that have both integrated and discrete GPUs).
a) Use the correct driver for AMD and NVIDIA GPUs:
- For AMD integrated graphics (Ryzen 7 7840HS), make sure you're using the open-source amdgpu driver. This is usually included by default in most modern Linux distributions.
- For the NVIDIA RTX 3050, make sure you are using either the NVIDIA proprietary driver or the nouveau open-source driver (though the proprietary one tends to work better for gaming and power management).
To check if your drivers are correctly installed and active, use the following commands:# For AMD driver:
lspci -nn | grep VGA
dmesg | grep amdgpu
# For NVIDIA driver:
nvidia-smi
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Im not beginner nor expert in Linux so my drivers is correctly set up because i can use it on my Display Port (over USB-C that uses amdgpu) and HDMI external monitor (which uses Discrete GPU directly). This black screen issue only happens in internal laptop screen.
Furthermore, if i use latest AMD drivers from their site in Windows, there are also some black screen issues. Screen lit up after 20 or 30 seconds later and it has some broken driver behaviour.
I think it happens because of my iGPU in CPU.
Thanks for your help.

Hi @erenalyoruk

It sounds like you're encountering several issues with your HP Envy 4520, where the print settings appear locked and you're unable to print in color, despite your color cartridges being functional (as shown by the alignment page and diagnostic tests). Let's break this down and explore potential causes and solutions for the problem.
What Could Be Causing the Issue?
1. Locked Settings in Print Dialog
- Locks on Settings: The "locks" in the print dialog typically indicate that certain print settings are restricted, possibly due to the current configuration or software. These locks may prevent you from changing settings like color or double-sided printing.
- Possible Cause: These locks can occur if you're using an incorrect or incomplete printer driver, if you're working with certain settings like a default print preset, or if you're trying to print from a specific application that restricts settings.
How to Resolve:
- Unlock Print Settings: Try clicking the lock icon next to the settings to unlock them. This should allow you to make changes like color selection, paper size, or two-sided printing. Ensure the print dialog is expanded fully so that you can see all options.
- Change Printer Defaults: In System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your HP Envy 4520 printer, then click Options & Supplies. From here, check the default settings and ensure they’re set to Color and not Grayscale or Black & White.
2. Incorrect Printer Settings
- Sometimes, printer software or settings can default to black and white or grayscale even if color is selected in the application (like Microsoft Word).
How to Fix:
- Check Color Settings in Word: In Microsoft Word, make sure the Color option is selected under the Print Settings when you go to File > Print.
- Check Print Preferences: On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your HP printer, and look for Print Settings. Ensure that the color is selected, and not grayscale or Black & White.
3. Driver or Software Issue
- Corrupted Driver: A corrupt or outdated printer driver can cause issues with printing settings, including color options. Even though your test pages show color, it’s possible the print driver isn’t properly communicating the settings to the printer.
How to Fix:
- Reinstall Printer Driver: Go to the HP Support website and download the latest driver for your HP Envy 4520. You can also use HP Smart (the app) to reinstall the drivers and ensure your printer is up to date.
- Use HP Smart App: The HP Smart app can sometimes handle settings and printer issues better than relying on macOS's default drivers.
4. Check Ink Cartridges and Printhead
- Even though the test page printed in red and your diagnostic shows color, color printing problems could also stem from clogged nozzles or a failing printhead, particularly if the printer hasn’t been used in a while.
How to Fix:
- Clean the Printhead: Try running the printhead cleaning cycle from the printer’s control panel. This can help clear up any blockages in the color ink channels.
- Check Ink Levels: Double-check the ink levels in the printer settings (through the printer or HP software). If any cartridge is low, try replacing it to see if that resolves the issue.
5. Document Settings
- If you're printing from Microsoft Word or another application, ensure that you’re not printing in any draft mode or with any special color settings that could override the color print setting.
How to Fix:
- In Word, go to File > Print > and check if the Print Settings are configured to Color instead of grayscale.
Steps to Try:
Unlock Print Settings:
- In the Print Dialog box, click the lock icon to unlock settings.
- Change Color Settings to "Color" rather than "Black & White" or "Grayscale".
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
